Karyn's Story

Life It's funny sometimes how life turns out, isn't it? I remember being asked in high school what I thought I'd be doing 10 years from now. I figured I'd still be living at home, job hopping and unhappy. Never in a million years did I figure my life would be even minutely close to what it is now. I don't live with my parents still like I predicted I would in the yearbook. I moved away to college right after high school like many people do. I quickly learned that college was not for me. I had a hard time focusing on schoolwork and couldn't decide on a major and was just very depressed. I quit college after 3 semesters and moved back home for a short time. On a whim, one day I decided to go to the U.S. Navy recruiter's office. Within 2 weeks, I was in boot camp. I made it through boot camp and then went to Radioman "A" school and got my first orders - to Keflavik, Iceland. I was horrified. I couldn't imagine anything worse than Iceland. I guess this is about when I learned how to make lemonade. Shortly after I arrived in Iceland, I met someone that I would marry a year and a half later, and by the time we left Iceland we had two beautiful children. I wasn't very happy with my job; Radioman had reclassified to Informations Systems Technician and while I love computers, the job wasn't something I enjoyed. At the end of my tour in Iceland, I put in an application to convert to Legalman, the military's equivalent of a paralegal. I was accepted and went to school in Oct. '02. I did very well in school, squashing all the n...Expand for more
egativity I had toward myself in an educational setting and from that point, everything has continued to get better and better for me. Maybe getting a little older has something to do with it, but I finally got to a point in my life where I realized that you just can't make everyone happy. All I can do is my best and surround myself with people with similar values to my own. I finally realized that comparing myself to others would only leave me feeling worse about myself, so now I set my own standards and create my own happiness. My family and I moved from the Pacific Northwest (which we loved and miss!) to Spain (which has been...interesting...to say the least) at the end of 2005. Since being here, I've been to London, Iraq, back to Iceland, to Italy, Bahrain, and all around southern Spain, Morocco, and Gibraltar as a tourist. We're hoping soon to go to Portugal and hopefully France before we leave in 2009. We were adopted by two kitties that completed our family. My son, Isak, is 8 and my daughter, Anja, is 6. I'd love to reconnect with old classmates, so drop me a line sometime at karynsig ( at ) gmail . com School I hated school! I wish I would have cared less about what people thought about me, or that I knew than what I know now. Military I was an RM (radioman), which merged into IT (informations systems technician), and I recently crossrated to LN (legalman) which I am loving. I've been to Iceland, Whidbey Island, Everett, a deployment with the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN, Rota, Spain, and a deployment to Baghdad, Iraq.
