Kate's Story
Life
My life has changed drastically in the last year.
I finally went back to college and graduated in August.
I also just started my first year teaching (middle school music)!
School
I remember back in junior high...getting called to the principal's office because a few of us were trying to get Gretchen Wierman out in bombordament (wasn't that the point? I mean, she always knocked that darn pin over before the game even started!)
In high school, going in early for choir and stage band. Walking the halls before 1st hour.
Suffering through 2 years of Spanish and not learning a single sentence.
Singing the Star Spangled Banner at the Bradley basketball game from the three-point line.
Cruising around town.
Trying out for cheerleading year after year after year after ....(you get the point)
Military
I took some time off in college and joined the National Guard.
...went to army basic in Ft. Jackson in 1996 and then went on to Aberd...Expand for more
een Proving Grounds to learn how to weld.
Basic training- I hated it! I hated it! I hated it!
I mean, it was great, because I accomplished things I never imagined doing...like the obstacle courses, shooting M16s (although not very well), going through the gas chamber and digging a fox hole.
AIT - on the other hand was so incredible.
I loved the rules. And even more, I loved learning how to break the rules :)
I was our drill sergeant's favorite (or so I let myself believe), I was "squared away", and went up for soldier of the month.
Leaving ABP was bittersweet. I was excited to go home, but I had some really, really great times during my 3 months there!
4 years later I joined the Air National Guard.
I spent 2 years in Finance and 2 years as the supply clerk for Civil Engineering. The whole time in the Air Guard, I was a full time employee....wearing my bdu's to work every day got old...but at least I knew what I was wearing every morning when I got up!
