Kathi's Story
*Most of my peers know I was crazy about Spanish. I chose Central College in Pella, Iowa because it had one of the top 10 foreign language departments in the country, and it was close to home. I graduated with a B.A. (Major in Spanish; Minor in Anthropology/Socialogy). To get my spanish major credits, I attended Central's abroad study programs in Yucatan, Mexico, and both Madrid and Granada, Spain (where I experienced bomb threats on the university, street protests lead by young adults very against Spain becoming part of NATO, as well as close encounters of the scarey kind with the machine gun toting Spanish Guardia Civil).
*My plans of a post-graduation happily ever after with my Yucatecan finance died a slow death beginning with the severe economic problems in Mexico, you got it, right before I graduated. I coudn't get paid in dollars and the loan offices actually laughed at being paid in pesos. So,create a plan B:
* I decided Houston, Texas would be the perfect place to use my Spanish, and keep warm at the same time, not to mention it was closer to Mexico and my fiance. Unfortunately, all my dream jobs were absorbed already by the people who lost jobs after the early 80's oil crunch. Since my college student loans wouldn't go away as much as I wished them away, I had to create a plan C :
*Naturally, I decided to become a nanny/ au pair in New York's Long Island where I received room, board and a paycheck and was able to pay off ...Expand for more
those persistant student loans and have a whole lot of fun at the same time. (Lots more to do, not only on the Island, but in New York City just a 50 minute train ride away.)
*Plan D : 7 Years later, to recover from the dual nightmares of ovarian cancer and a psycho ex, I relocated to Sunny Floida, where I have survived and thrived for 17 years. I live in Horse country, in the western gulf "Nature Coast"; less than 2 hours away from Daytona Beach, Orlando, and Tampa/St Pete.
*I have been one of Jehavah's Witnesses for the last 16 years which had a bearing in survivng and thriving.
*I am fortunate to own my house and vehicle, so can have the luxury of part-time self-employment to pay the utilities and other expenses.
*School related ironies :
+I live 20 some miles from Ocala. Our Senior class visited Silver Springs Park. They still do the glass bottom boat rides. I prefer Daytona's Atlantic Ocean beaches to the 15 minute away Gulf of Mexico beaches, so I get there frequently, as well as the occasional trips to Disney World, though I prefer Epcot and Universal Studios/Universal City Walk to Disney.
+In 2002, 25 years after my spanish class trip to Mexico City, Taxco and Acapulco, Mexico, I took the same trip, but this time as a High School Spanish Teacher with my own students. Fortunately, this time we flew in and out, and the inter-country buses were in working order, so no burning dashboards, faulty brakes or general breakdowns.
