Kathleen (Kathy)'s Story

Life Hi, Welcome to my life! :) As you may know by this point, I graduated Grant in '71 (Better than us, there are none!!). I did go on to CLC for 58.5 credits, as I wasn't interested in evening classes for a few years, til after I married. In May of '78, my Associate of Arts Degree came to me along with my Teaching Para. Approximately one month later, my first child and only daughter was born. With a family and home to help support, I stayed at the employment I had obtained at American Air Filter, here in Zion. I held varying positions from clamp truck driver in the warehouse, to shear operator on the production floor, to assistant super. coupled with Union Steward. During these years, my second child and only son was born. After hubby hired on at Abbotts, I was able to move into the office and learn more positions as well as more about the business. During the "tornado that wasn't" that hit Zion in '96, Zion's AAF was in the process of moving to Indiana anyway and that storm ended employment for many of us about a month early. My oldest, Kristy, was graduating h.s. that spring, so I was able to be home and ready the house and family for her graduation party. Immediately following, my plans were bubbling for starting at UW Parkside. (This would be the second most traumatic situation in my life thus far... going back to college full-time in my forties.) The kids were old enough and I had no more long term employment (twenty-toooo many year...Expand for more
s at AAF). Although I desired my teaching certification, Parkside doesn't offer a major in education and would not allow Psych. as a major if pursuing a teaching cert. I did settle for Sociology and found it interesting...although it was akin to pursuing a double major when adding the hours for education need for teaching certification. When I needed volunteer work for a class, I checked into Northpointe Resources (supporting adults with disabilities), as they had been a vendor for us at AAF. I'm proud to say I have been affiliated with NPI now for 8 years as a job coach, employment specialist, DT1 assistant and production floor volunteer. I have also attained my life long goal of teaching in a public school. I hold the post of Special Needs Kindergarten Teacher at Shiloh Park Elementary, also in Zion. I'm happy to report I'm teaching in the same building and classrooms where my children attended their first years of school. The staff is awesome and every day is an exciting new challenge. Jim and I divorced in the late nineties. Kristy is soon to be 28 and graduating this spring from Trinity Christian. Jeff will be 24 this summer and recently graduated from Nascar Tech. in NC. We four still have close family ties, although pursuing our own interests and lives. Nope, no grandchildren or even son or daughter-in-law yet, unless you count my Callie Cat's seven new babies as my grandbabies. :) Thanks for reading. Hope to talk with you soon!
