Kathleen's Story
Life
Yes -- my birthday is April 1st -- the best day of the year. You have to have a sense of humour with a birthday on April 1st. I have had more jokes played on me than I can count.
After high school I worked in various jobs (Chum Radio; Pension Department of the Anglican Church of Canada) etc., usually office. In 1971 I married Ward Lindsey (also a Earl Haig grad). We still live in Willowdale, in fact all three of our residences have
been within a 2 mile radius of Earl Haig. We have one son who is now 32 years old.
I am now retired as the Parish Administrator at St. George's Anglican Church, at Yonge & Churchhill Avenue in North York. Actually I was moved into retirement. St. George's is in the midst of a redevelopment project. Like most of downtown North York, changes are in the works. If everything goes alright (and it hasn't) we will be in a new building -- who knows when -- we were supposed to be in our new building in December 2006. As you will note it is now March 2011 -- (not in yet and I get to observe from the side lines (yeah). The tearing down of the oldest portion of the church was slated for November 2009, it actually happened in January 2010. The Deconsecration Service of the Building and the last Sunday worship Service was held on Sunday November 22nd, 2009. The offices were moved into the Manse and have turned it into the Parishes Community Space and offices. The rebuilding is slowly moving ahead. Although Ward and I have been parishioners at St. George, and Ward's parents and grandparents, actually our son is 4th generation at St. Georges -- we have moved on. The only regret I have is that the parish and the Corporation has pushed me in a the position of "I don't care really what happens anymore and am glad to be out". I am burned right out.
We are now attending Christ Church Deer Park at St. Clair and Yonge. Great Choral Music. Any members of St. Georges looking for a change -- ...Expand for more
I would recommend it highly.
Although I love living in the neighbourhood that I grew up in -- it is changing so fast and everything is moving so fast. I love the diversity though. It is a great place to be.
In regards to retiring -- Ward and I joke -- maybe freedom 85!! Who knows. I believe that the philosophy of life is that you should NOT work in your job with the aim to retire, with that attitude I think it may be hard to enjoy the journey.
In the next couple of years we had planned on rebuilding our cottage into a home that can be enjoyed all year round, that project is now on hold. Whether we retire to the area of Lake Simcoe or not is still up in the air -- we are not sure. We are now looking at moving to Lindsay and keep the cottage as a cottage. I personally would like the Coburg or Port Hope area. Regardless we want to be in an area with an active arts community. In an ideal world it would be great to have a condo in Toronto and a home up north. Hey why not a villa in Italy -- an apartment in London, England. Anywhere else that fancies me. That would involve a big dream machine with money to back it up. Only a lottery win would fix that one. Oh well!!!
What ever we do -- we love the journey.
In regards to the high school experience -- mine was not very enjoyable. If you asked me which teacher stood out for me -- it would be Mrs. Bell and Mr. Gilkinson, both to me had an empathy for my learning process. The one with the least regard for a struggling student was Mr. Hall. You were fine if you were a somewhat shining star. I spent a lot of time walking out of his class because he'd like to make fun of me. If he ridiculed me I just left the room and went to the Principal's office. I knew he was wrong -- too bad he didn't know it. Oh -- really glad high school is gone and found out life on the other side really is good and High School really was not important to my development as caring person.
