Kathleen's Story
By the way, my "Now" photo was taken when I was about 30. :o)
Although I won a 4-year NYS Regents Scholarship and planned to go to SUNY Cortland, having no funds for room & Board, I instead chose to move with Lorraine Mullin to the Washington, DC, area right after high school (now, how dumb was that?); we lived with her father, step-mother and step-brother; she stayed two weeks and went back to Adams - came down again later and went back to Adams (Lorraine now lives in Triangle, VA); I immediately went to work for the National Geographic Society; got married in '65 (to Lorraine's step-brother (now, how dumb was that?); we separated in '70 and divorced in '72; have not remarried; have worked for law firms from 1970 to present; have 2 cats, Blackie and Fluffy, a Maine Coon cat; moved from a 4-BR house in the Maryland suburbs to a 2-BR condo in Arlington, VA, in 2006, and went from a 1-1/2 hr. commute (distance 21 miles) to a half hour commute as my condo building is virtually on top of a Metrorail station; no longer have a car - use the subway, the bus or rent Zipcars by the hour when there's a need to; am looking forward to retiring at 66 - let's see...that's NOW!! Will be retiring by the end of August 2011. (Update on retirement, although I am "retired" from being a legal secretary at the firm, I have stayed on to help our Marketing Department with a big project. I expect to be here for some time - it is currently ...Expand for more
July 2013) By the way, formerly a Hillary backer, I worked to get Barack Obama elected by doing voter registration and phone banking at his nearby office. I do Like President Obama but think that Hillary would have made a better, more decisive President.
When I was 23, I had a baby girl that I gave up for adoption (records sealed by court). Thought I would never see her again, although I hoped I would. In January 2010, a friend suggested I sign up on an adoption website. I did so and within 5-1/2 hours I had the name of my daughter - Nancy Anne Taylor. Talked with Nancy that evening and found out that I am a grandmother to Haley, 15, and Harrison, 12. Nancy lives in New Hampshire. She flew down to meet me on April 2nd. I also met her father and step-mother who drove up from North Carolina (Nancy's mother passed away when Nancy was 24), and her cousins Bruce and Debbie (brother and sister - Bruce lives about 2 blocks from me, Debbie about a 45 min. drive). Everyone was so kind and welcomed me to their family. It was a wonderful experience. In July I fly up to New Hampshire to spend a few days and meet my grandchildren. I am so blessed to have found her. UPDATE: I traveled to New Hampshire to spend Nancy's birthday with her and the children. Haley and Harrison are great kids. Nancy has been a wonderful mother to them. In such a short time my life has been immeasurably enriched. God is good. Life is good.
