Kathleen's Story

FIND ME >> Kathleen Sanderson-Colton on facebook. Once I graduated from high school, I jumped into the working world headfirst and happily became quite successful fairly quickly. I expected my life would be settled somewhere in Southeastern Massachusetts, but, as we all know by now, fate is always adding a new card to your hand. While on a trip to extreme northern Maine to attend a close friend's wedding, I met a man who would become my husband. John and I married in 1984, moved to Eastern Maine and for a number of years, both worked for Bar Harbor Airlines based out of Bangor. In spite of several medical obstacles, I was finally blessed with the births of my two daughters who have become extraordinary young women. They are my life. I lived there for 13 years enjoying the proximity to Acadia National Park, Baxter State Park, many good friends and spectacular scenery all encased in a comfortably-paced life. Then my husband got an offer to transfer here to Southern Maine to take a lucrative position with a large company. With a heavy heart, I left that idyllic life and moved "down south". We purchased a home in Saco after spending a long, memorable summer at a rented home on a lake. We have lived here for just about 15 years and life just been a blur!! Hearing the word "no" too often while growing up, I promised that I would swing wide any doors that my kids chose to explore. Never missing an event, the better part of the last two decades has been spent cheering them on from the bleachers. Those circumstances required me to temporarily surrender many of my pursuits, but I wouldn't trade the pasta-party-hosting, the uniform-washing, the homecoming-decorating, the thousands of water bottles, injuries (real and imagined), thousands of hours of videotape and countless photos, gobs of gasoline, sweet victories, bitter defeats, hairspray, costumes and bobby pins, the reeking-beyond-belief equipment bags and oh, the SCADS of footwear along with spending enough money to feed a small country, for anything! A full calendar also comes from being just outside of Portland and a little over an hour to Boston. My oldest graduated from Oswego State University in NY in May '11. ics and German. She was recruited by OSU as a springboard diver, spent her 4 yrs as a NCAA diver, making Nationals in her Junior year. Spring of her Junior year was spent studying for an extended semester in Germany, Austria & Switzerland. She is presently getting her MBA at Defiance College in Ohio where she is also the diving coach and a teaching assistant. The world is that girl's oyster - no fear. My youngest graduated 9th in her high school class in June of '10. She's beginning her sophomore year at American University in DC. She is a member of the School of International Service as well as the School of Communications. She is dual-majoring while minoring in German. She's a goalie on the AU field hockey team and is a member of Alpha Phi Omega. She has always had pretty lofty goals for herself and I completely expect her to supersede every one of them. She's the scary smart kind. Her travels to Italy, Germany & France have sparked an interest in languages and cultures. Since motherhood has always been job one, the conventional jobs (the PAID ones) had to fit seamlessly. I've had careers in the airline and marine industries, technology, art, sales & marketing, teaching and media coinciding with community involvement like girl scouting, recreation department, volunteer coordinator, book fairs, PTO, etc. I currently work for a data retrieval firm out of Chicago and South Dakota as a field representative in the automotive industry and am employed by the US Dept. of Homeland Security. My parents live about an hour away in NH's White Mountains. Mattapoisett re-enters my life now and then with my two sisters, Judy and Susan, still living there and my brother, Chuck in Rochester. I occasionally take a ride through town to see how familiar things look through seasoned eyes. With the girls making their own way, I now have the opportunity to explore and rediscover myself. I spend some of my free time in photography, kayaking, hiking, etc. and the rest of it flying, driving or riding on trains along the Eastern Seaboard and out to the Great Lakes! You know how people always say "life is too short!"? Well, life never stops moving and there's a whole lotta livin' to be done in a 24-hour day!
