Kathleen's Story

Workplace Upon graduation from college, I worked as an elementary teacher for 2 years at St. John the Baptist School in Manayunk (4th grade). I then returned to St. Pat's in Norristown, and I taught 3rd grade for 5 years in the very same classroom I had for 3rd grade when I attended St. Pat's many years earlier! I still have my state certification in elementary education. I left teaching after 7 years and returned to school (Katharine Gibbs School) to take a program for college graduates without a degree in business who wanted to secure a position in the business world. After Gibbs, I worked in Center City Philly at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. for 3 1/2 years. I was the assistant to the head of the investment department, and I spoke daily with multi-millionaires. It was pretty cool, but I missed teaching. I left Brown Brothers for a job in training at Dictaphone Corp. I worked there for almost 12 years, traveling around the 5 county Philadelphia area (and occasionally around the country) to train customers that bought one of Dictaphone's computer systems. It was a very interesting job, since I got to meet lots of nice people and had a lot of variety in the computer systems I worked with. I also attained my Certified Technical Trainer designation (CTT+). After Dictaphone fell on some hard times, they had a big layoff. I w...Expand for more
as one of the victims. Dictaphone as a company survived, but my job did not. Although this was a very challenging time for me, I ended up beginning my own business, Kathy's Just Desserts. What a thrill to build a business from the ground up! I now sell made-to-order baked goods (including wedding cakes) and teach culinary classes to children and to adults. It's been exciting to see so many of my ideas come to fruition. I've got a website but Classmates won't allow me to post it. It's my company name (minus the apostrophe and spaces) with dot com after it. In September of 2004, I also began a part-time job teaching Computer classes to Pre-K3 through 8th grades at Conshohocken Catholic School. I was there through June of 2007, then I moved to St. Teresa of Avila for one year as a part-time Computer teacher there. As of this writing, I'm now devoting myself to building the business. Last year, I managed to get a small business loan - and I've expanded my business quite a bit. I have a division called Kitchen Wizards for my culinary programs, and I now have 4 culinary instructors teaching programs for me, as well as a business development manager, who is building up my business - we'll be hitting the Jersey shore area for summer camps, South NJ for fall after-school programs, and more expansion to follow... Life is good!
