Kathryn's Story
I was pretty happy go lucky in high school...it was an attempt to hide the fact that I was shy, and a real people pleaser. I thought that was the way to get people to like me. I guess that also says that I had a lack of confidence, but then I don't think I was alone in that instance.
It was only after " living with myself"
living a bit longer, experiencing what life has to offer (not always good) that I am comfortable with who I am, what I have done and what I am doing now.

My biggest surprise in life has been
that I did not change the world in a big way..I have realized that I am but a small grain of sand on a very large beach. Alone, I have a small voice, together with other people, I can make a tremendous amount of noise.
In small ways, in my practice of nursing,I touch individual's lives every day.
I find that humor is a way to connect
and it can raise my patients spirits as we deal with all the "serious stuff"
that needs attention. I like to get patients to talk about their families, those they love or loved, some times they will show me pictures. As a home care nurse, I visit their world, and on their terms. The second biggest surprise in my life is that I really
enjoy what I do.

My first hero was a heroine...my late
mother, She was a single mom, when it
was'nt fashionable. Coming from the Bay area, and settling in this small town, where, as my Mom put it, "They roll up the streets at night" She was separated from my Dad and she experienced the cultural shock of moving to a small town, with no means of support. The first thing she did was get a job at a cannary, She lasted
2 weeks, working on the line gave her verdigo. She worked for a florist for several years, spent most of my school years working at S.H Kress downtown.
The old saying "If there is a will, there is a way" that was my mother's motto. We did'nt have alot of money, but that women could really stretch a
buck...New clothes for school...she let me pick them out, and then put them on layaway, and pay a little every week, and by September, they would appear just in time for the new school year. She did with out to provide me with every thing I needed, no compliants or bitterness, just unconditional love. I was lucky to have her for 50 years. When she passed away I thought my heart would
break, but it did'nt. She prepared me well, my strong, pragmatic, practical
Mother.
