Kathryn's Story

Life I went back to San Antonio in 1997. By 2000, I was transfered by Southwestern Bell to Houston, but was later laid off in July 2001, along with 19,000 other new management. I live alone now after nearly a year after the death of my husband I married in November 2001. However, jobs and my daughter have brought me back to Austin,TX. I wonder why I ever left Austin...it just feels so right to be here! Would love to see more of you all some day....maybe soon???? In my spare time, I have been involved with the Toastmasters & ToughLove programs, Montgomery County Genealogical & Historical Society, and active at my Church. I was ordained as a Deacon on May 18th, 2003, and on June 1, 2003, I was commissioned for a mission trip to Guatemala (trip was from June 5th through June 14th)..... Just recently I have been approved for DAR membership!! School My school years started to look sporatic as I entered 1st grade at Pershing Hill Elem in Ft. Meade Maryland & 2nd grade at Harmony Hills Elem in San Antonio, TX. I was fortunate that the family settled down after that point in time and I continued going through school with many of the same friends I had in 3rd grade through graduation from ...Expand for more
High School. Now we are scattered throughout the United States and I look forward to seeing them once again some day. College I had loved my college days at the University of Texas in Austin, but physics (literaly the phyics class) got in the way of my following through with any one degree. Before I left Austin in 1994, I had already started working towards a Criminal Justice degree, but life pathways were ominous; however, I am finally re-pursuing my Criminal Justice degree -- and, I am loving it. In 1991, I had received a Legal Assistant Certificate from The Univerity of Texas' Legal Assistant Program and have had jobs accordingly during the last 12 or more years. The Criminal Justice degree will be just the icing on the cake!! :) Workplace Not my whole career arc; however, I am presently working a 24hr shift at a DVSA (domestic violence/sexual assault) shelter as a Night/Wknd Manager. It certainly has its good points and bad. I have even found myself advocating funding for shelters and NAMI issues at the Capitol, which has been a thrilling experience. Trying to get through the tough economic times while pursuing my criminal justice/paralegal studies degrees with a concentration in mediation!
