Kathy's Story

Life has a funny way of going on without us, doesn't it? All the many twists and turns and ending up in places we never dreamed of. I guess we all tend to get wrapped up in our own lives and many of us (I'm certainly guilty) lose touch with the people that meant so much to us...our buddies from high school to name a few. I'm a Foreign Service Diplomat, no joke. Never thought I'd be doing this. Singer to diplomat!?!!!! Been doing this for 11 yrs. I work at US Embassies and Consulates in Public Affairs, pretending to be the spokesperson :) I identify people from whatever country I'm assigned to who we want to have a US experience...send them to the US for anywhere from a week to a year, then follow what they do when they return to their own country. I work with marginal members of society on educational projects and with not-for-profits, businessmen, politicians and law enforcement officials, scientists, teachers, kids, you name it. Explain America and Americans....winning friends and influencing people. Did this in Brazil, Panama and Nicaragua about 6 years, and did a few years based out of Washington, DC, traveling the world negotiating environmental agreements related to oceans. Great 3 yr assignment that took me to 15 countries for a couple of weeks at a time, at the UN often, and always meeting some really interesting folks. Haven't ...Expand for more
stopped singing. As a matter of fact, the newspapers in Brazil published several stories about me, and always refer to me as the "singing diplomat". (not to be confused with the flying nun) In Brazil I was performing American jazz with some terrifically talented Brazilians as a way of doing cultural outreach. I recorded a new CD there...Brazilian music...bossa nova, baiao, toada, xote, and some ballads. Did some writing too. There are some photos of the concert that launched the CD on Dec. 9, 2008 in Recife, Brazil at the historic St. Isabel Theatre built in the early 1800's. After a couple of years in Brazil, I was recruited to work as a cultural attache at the US Embassy in London, which is where I am currently. So that's what I've been up to. But, the very best part of it all is that I've been blessed with two wonderful sons, 2 adorable daughters-in-law, and one precious grandson and another on the way... in Paducah, KY and Evansville, IN...thank God for Skype video conferences that keeps me from missing them so much in between my once a year visits. Other info ----divorced ----happy to be alive ----thankful for good friends I'd love to connect with ya'll again....drop me a note on yahoo when you can...katiaben2 . I am not a gold member anymore, so I can't read and reply here on this site. love and kisses! Kathy Kate or hey you!
