Kathy's Story

After High School, I attended Mt. Hood CC, then went on to Oregon State (joined Delta Gamma Sorority there - had fun and kept track of other DDHS grads who also attended OSU.) After College I moved to Seattle and started my career with Frederick & Nelson (one of Seattle's major department stores.) I was in their Executive Training Program which lead to a buying position. Great job, crummy hours - and traveled to most major cities. Loved the travel as you might imagine. Young, single, seeing the world and all.....being wined and dined at the most amazing places! Moved back to Portland and worked as a Buyer for Meier & Frank for a couple of years, then off to Phoenix. Married my first husband Roy whom I'd met while we were both working for Frederick & Nelson - he was a Store Managaer there. As a Buyer, it was pretty easy for me to move with him, following his career. After Phoenix, was a stop in Michigan before we returned to the Northwest. Roy's career was set, he was promoted to Director of Stores, back at Frederick and Nelsen of all places, which was his dream. I decided there had to be more than Retail - and it was my turn to figure things out. I knew I wanted to some how make a difference in the world or in peoples lives. Oh to be young and dream........ I'd always enjoyed math, people, and planning, however it seemed I never had any time for myself or my friends or family working in Retail. You work all the Holidays and three day weekends because those are prime sales events! It had gotten old after, 8 years!! I joined Egghead Discount Software when they were just getting started and prior to them going public as the Director of In Store Presentation. That was a transitional position while I was figuring out what I really wanted to do. It seemed natural to change careers and to enter the financial services field. So in 1987 I joined Dean Witter which became Morgan Stanley, then moved in 1999 to PaineWebber which becaume UBS. Was promoted to Senior Vice President when I joined the firm, and that had been one of my milestone goals! Recently (Feb. of 2009) I joined Smith Barney which then became Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Along the way I took time to earned an advanced professional designation through the Investment Management Consultants Association & The Wharton School. (Always have enjoyed learning new things.) So - what they say is true "what goes around, comes around." I've come full circle!! I'm back at Morgan Stanley. My recent move has enabled me to move my practice to the Eastside of Seattle, from downtown Seattle. Saves me an hour each day in commute time since Chuck and I live out in Snoqualmie on "The Ridge". Boy, a lot has changed in 23+ years in the industry!! I still have a passion for my profession and love what I do! I basically help people live a worry free life. (Give me a call or Google my name to visit my website if you would like to have a conversation with me about how I might be able to help you!) May 2018 my Team and I moved to our final destination - Raymond James. We were recruited to open their new branch (opening Fall if 2018) ...Expand for more
at Carillon Point in Kirkland, Washington. We are thrilled to have affiliated with such an amazing firm who pride themselves in providing exceptional customer services, cutting edge technology and all of the services that even the largest of firms offers but with the intimate feel of a small boutique firm. Okay, so on the family side, what’s happened? My first husband and I divorced in 1990 and some of you may recall that I was Kathy Gray back then. I had always thought that Roy and I would start a family, however he changed his mind. How the heck do things like that happen anyway?? Absent starting a family, I threw myself into my career - and as you might have guessed, we were grew apart, then divorced. I kept the name of Gray after the divorce, since it was quite a task to change my name on all of my licenses and registrations. While I may have missed the opportunity to raise a family of my own, I did marry into a great one in 2004! I met the love of my life on e-Harmony of all places. Chuck is such a joy to live with and I wake up every day thankful to share my life with him. In his work life he wears the hat of Director of Business Development for VMC, a technology consulting firm. He's worked in technology for some 30 years and began his career working on the first PC at IBM, then AT&T, on to Microsoft then VMC. Yes he's a bit older than I am. He turned 68 this year (2018). I insist - age is a state of mind, not a number that he should pay any attention to. Gosh you sure wouldn't know it if you met him. He has two kids, ok - young adults: Aubrey and Adam, whom I love dearly. Aubrey is 41 and just finished her PhD. She has just accepted a position as Head Curator for the Roswell, NM Museum of Art. Adam is 36, he resides in Santa Cruz where he is the Director if IT for the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. No, I'm not a grandma yet.......crossing my fingers and still hoping though. Let's see ...........Oh, yes, there is one little detail that I left out. We had a fairytale wedding in England of all places! Turns out Chuck is the 17th Earl of Buckinghamshire. That makes him a Lord, he loves that! And me, well I'm a Contessa, or a Lady =) Chuck is such a romantic. He thought that it would be an amazing experience to have a full costume Renaissance Wedding at his ancestral home (turns out it was a castle) in England (Blickling Hall). So we took a year to plan it, and of course visited to set everything up. It truly was a memory of a lifetime! ----- 2 day event: Full costume wedding (including guests), lawn tournament games, falconry exhibit, tea lecture, horse drawn carriage and well, you get the idea! If you remember Patty Wolff from our classs, she was of my Bridesmaides. (Patty you are the best - I know those shoes were killing you!!) ........................Then it was off to Paris, Nice, Florence and Milan for three weeks of honeymoon time. I am happy to report we are living happily ever after! Okay - enough of about me.............post to your page and tell me what's up with you!! Cheers, until the next reunion........... Be well, be happy - take good care.
