Michael's Story
I transferred from Fayetteville High School, Fayetteville, N.C. and enrolled in Killeen H.S. around November of 1964. I walked into a new beautiful high school, went to my first class, and looked out a classroom window. I saw a cow grazing very close to the school. I wonder what this was all about. I had been in 4 high schools in 4 years. Consequently, adjustment was tough for me. I saw a very pretty student in one of my classes and I wanted to get to know her. I asked a guy sitting next to me and he gave me a wrong name. She was a patient person and helped me understand Texas high school life. I had started in an American high school in Germany with a total junior high and high school population of around 450 students and graduated from KHS with a graduating of about 450 students. I went to St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. I graduated in 4 1/2 years and ended up on 5 graduation lists and a continuous question from my advisor about if I would ever graduate. I went into the Army to attend OCS, but the politicians of the day knew that the Vietnam war would end and we were allowed to apply to be stationed anywhere. I ended up guarding nuclear rockets in Germany. When my service time was up, I started teaching in Tampa, Florida, moved to teach in Pearland, Texas, and then...Expand for more
Friendswood, Texas. I ran out of money while teaching and went to work for an oil company. I was an operator, a firefighter, a paramedic, and a rescue volunteer. After that, I moved to Chicago and when the recession hit in 2008, I went back and taught at Sante Fe High School, Sante Fe, Texas. After that I fully retired around 2012. Does any one really retire? Oh, I did get married and have two grown children with their own families. My wife was an AP junior level English teacher who had a superlative record of high scores on the AP exam from the students who survived. Being a science teacher, I asked her about finding Martians on Mars. Her only reply was that they will have to learn write if they want to be in her class. My best skill was that I could adapt to almost any student and find away for most to understand how to succeed. I could not help everybody, but I tried everyday. That was what I learned from trying to adapt to so many schools, so many different philosophies, and so many different types of people. My philosophy of life is that every day is a new day to make it the best day ever. Life is not dull for me and I would like to meet any of my fellow high school graduates that I never got to know. I live in Katy, Texas in a former rice field. Say hello when you can.
