Kathy's Story
I graduated from Trenton State College in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, and started teaching. I married Bernie Hogya (yeah, the lead player from Mortimer Snerd!) in 1980, taught 5th, 7th and 8th grades at St. Cecelia's School in Iselin NJ for 3 more years, then stayed home for the next 10 years to raise our girls, Lisa and Cheryl. Bernie is the guy who created the "Got Milk" mustache ads!
Serendipity and Cheryl starting Kindergarten brought me to Our Lady of Victories School in Sayreville, where Lisa was in 5th grade. I had been teaching and doing guitar music with CCD at OLV Church since 1989, and was asked to create a music program for the school in 1994. It was great to have the same schedule as the girls. My mixed Chorus of 6-7-8th graders performed every year for 9 years at the State Theater in New Brunswick each Christmas season with Plays-In-The-Park's production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". sic and theater. I resigned that position in 2004.
November 2004-present has seen us doing a lot of traveling... we've been going to the reunion shows of the Raspberries! In 1997 Bernie created and still runs Eric Carmen's website, and we've been so fortunate to have befriended Eric, Wally Bryson, Jim Bonfanti and Dave Smalley and their families. I've met so many wonderful people through the website and at the different shows, and have made friends whom I know will last forever. ;-)
In October 2003 I trained to volunteer with the VNA of Central Jersey Hospice, which has become the most rewarding thing I've ever done. Along with my hospice work, currently I am enrolled in a distance learning course in Grief Counseling and Thanatology, and by fall of 2006 will become certified as a Grief Counselor. With my teaching and music background, I hope to someday help children and teenagers on their bereavement journeys. With the girls now 22 and almost 17, I'm able now to do some very different things.
I'm on a new path.... it'll be interesting to see where it leads.
