Kathy's Story

After high school, I moved to Redondo Beach and worked at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. A couple of years later, I joined the Navy and became a hospital corpsman. I got out of the Navy after my first enlistment and settled in the northeast for about 15 years, most of that time in a small town in New Hampshire that had a population of 2,000, a beautiful common and a white clapboard church overlooking a pond. In New Hampshire, I completed my degree in English Literature. I spent the last semester of my senior year in England and traveled all over Europe with my daughter. I also began writing for local newspapers. I came to Arizona for graduate school and stayed. I attended the master's program in journalism at ASU, then took a job at Phoenix Magazine as managing editor. After PM, I worked at the Arizona Republic newspaper. I taught various writing and journalism courses at ASU over a 10-year period. Now I freelance, which suits me. If you're curious about my work, you can visit kathymontgomeronline dot com . s, between us. My husband and I live on 18 acres about two hours north of Phoenix in a home we built. It's 15 degrees cooler there in the summer, and our closest neighbors live two miles away. I've chronicled our building process at buildingadventure dot blogspot dot com. Our home is solar. We've joined the community garden and the book club in the nearest "town" of Yarnell, which is unincorporated. We do our shopping once a week in Prescott, the nearest town of any size. We gather with friends on Friday nights at the Yarnell Community Diner, which is a hoot. There's music and dancing and it's all over by 8 p.m. It's a simple life and a happy one. If you have heard of Yarnell, it's probably for the fire of June 2013, which killed 19 firefighters and destroyed a quarter of the homes in Yarnell. My husband and I were very active in the recovery process. My husband still serves as chair of the memorial park committee. In November 2008, some of us, from the classes of '78 and '79, gathered for an informal 30-year high school reunion in Las Vegas. It was a lot of fun. Check out our photos in the photo album.
