Kathy's Story

Life Since I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up anyway, I'm gratified to see that after 30 years I've managed to stay right on track! After an odd set of career postitions that evolved from working in retail stores, to buying for retail stores, to developing product for retail stores, and ulitimately writing advertising for retail stores, it all managed to moosh together into an estate liquidation business that seems to call on all of those experiences just about every day. With my husband, we buy estate contents and sell them both online and in-house. We've live in a cute little farm house where we can run our business, and where our dogs can run for hours. It came with a barn to store our inventory, and we're still looking around for that Rembrandt that's hidden in somebody's attic. The closest we've come is to finding rare turn-of-the century cigar label samples that were purchased by a collector for over $20,000! At least I get to work in my jammies when I want to, can take my lunch break to watch People's Court, and usually only have to work 7 days a week (but sometimes only for 10 - 16 hours a day). Last year we sent our little Drama Queen off to college ..... between having her boyfriend there and discovering that skipping a class (just because you can) can have serious ramifications on keeping up with the subject matter, it's really ...Expand for more
been quite a rollercoaster ride. I guess this really IS payback time for all the stuff we put our own parents through! I'm pleased to say that my folks have recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary, and although there are health woes to work through, they remain the rocks upon which I lean and the fountains of wisdom from which I learn. I've decided that the one part I truly hate about growing up is knowing that it is inevitable that I will have to cope with losing them. It was, of course, always a reality, but when wandering Bentley's halls it was a time so far away that it didn't even require any thought. Workplace Work is either in our home, setting up eBay auctions and then packing and shipping what we sell, or rummaging through other people's homes looking for cool stuff to buy ... and then hopefully sell to people who can't live without it. We do flea markets on Sundays during the "warm months" .... which often include a couple of cold ones in April and October. Thank goodness for long underwear. It's fun being self-employed, except for pesky things like health insurance and other stuff we just took for granted when we worked for "the man". But there was such a feeling of liberation when all our business clothes went to Goodwill! If you'd like to get in touch, I'll try really hard to remember who you are! (Kidding. Sort of.)
