Katie's Story

Life I've been teaching since the week after I finished college. I worked in Utah Valley for several years before returning to California. I also taught in LA in South Central before returning to Porterville to raise my two little ones. I'm teaching at the prison now and spending my weekends in Morro Bay. My children are grown; my son works for the County Mental Health center and my daughter works for the Visalia PD. I have a little charity where I chose a third grade class in an underprivileged school and manage to get them all college sweatshirts. If you don't know, you can't go, right? I fund it with my own money and the colleges are good about sending sweatshirts to me. And you should see the looks on the kids faces! Now that is priceless. Just to have someone believe in you,,, Mike, the romantic love of my life is the perfect partner for me. Not long ago, I mentioned that I sure wished we could go to Texas to see the wildflowers. We were in the truck the next day. Living with him is always an adventure! We have a boat and a little house over in Morro bay and you can catch us almost every weeken...Expand for more
d, shooting our bows out at the range or sitting in the sunshine on the patio saying profound things like "Tides out." Between the two of us, we have 4 adult children and four grandchildren. They are far more fun that then I ever imagined! School Biggest crush? That would be Gary from McFarland. What a hunk! Never noticed me, though. He was the best looking man I have ever seen with a real smooth voice that could turn you right into butter Mr. Waters (Uncle Howie) inspired me the most, as did Dale Funderburke and Helen Battles. They were all beyond great teachers who treated us with dignity and respect. If I can be half the teachers they were, I'll be a happy girl! Workplace I decided to become a teacher on the first day of kindergarten and luckily it worked out just fine for me. Right now, I'm teaching at a super max prison and still believe that God himself places each student into my class---not for what anyone can learn from me (my skills aren't that outstanding!!) but from what I can learn from them. And what I've learned is that there is good in everyone. And that is one comforting thought.
