Kay's Story
My story briefly. I graduated from the Univ. of Alabama in 1968 and went on to teach elementary school at Pleasant Grove School till 1975 when my daughter, Amanda, was born. I had married Bill Brown from Ensley in 1972. We divorced in 1978 and I went back to teaching at Pleasant Grove again. I quit teaching when Amanda entered middle school and worked part time at our church - Shades Mt. Baptist until Nov. 1993 when I went to work at Rocky Ridge Elem. School as the health room aide there. I remarried in 1982 to Bruce Mealins from Chicago. I've never lived anywhere outside the state of Alabama. After living in Forest Hills, my family moved to Bluff Park. I've also lived in Homewood, Central Park, Calera, Hoover, Vestavia Hills and now in Alabaster. I have two grown step-children by Bruce. ep-son lives with his family here in Chelsea; my step-daughter Caroline, lives in Covington just outside New Orleans with her family. My daughter, Amanda became a neo-natal nurse in 1999 and married Scott Powell in 2000. Scott and Amanda moved to Woodstock - outside of Chicago in Dec. 2000 and had a daughter, Avery in June 2003. On July 27, 2004 Amanda suffered a severe brain anurism rupture which left her in a coma for a month and in hospitals until Jan. 2005. She can no longer care for herself and lives here with Bruce and me. I quit work in May, 2005 since it was too difficult to care for Amanda and try to continue working and also because I have severe migraines. Life took many turns I certainly didn't expect as probably happens with most of us. God continues to care for us and to provide our needs.
