Kaye's Story
Life
Reader's Digest Condensed version:
It took me moving from Birmingham, AL to Los Angeles, CA to meet someone from Fort Lee, NJ. We met in Chicago and got to know each other in New York. After living several years in Massachusetts we now live in Connecticut with our 2 grown sons. We are: Kaye, Curt, Kyle and Craig. Our lives seem to be centered around sports. Both boys play ice hockey, roller hockey, and baseball. My husband still plays men's league hockey. It's sort of like men's softball in the south: They are actually a men's beer league with a hockey problem. Then there are the trips to see the New York Rangers and The New York Mets.
I'd love to hear from any of my old classmates.
Workplace
Right out of high school,I worked full time for a year and a half at Birmingham Trust National Bank in downtown Birmingham. I did this in order to pay for college, which I attended part-time for the last half year I was at BTNB. I had several jobs while continued I worked my way through school at UAB. Everything from working at a Teamsters office to gift wrap at Parisian at Christmas. After graduating I worked for a while as a temp at Bradley, Arant, Rose and White where my friend Cindy (Thompson)Owen was a paralegal. I then worked at Parisian in the Manager's training program. I worked at the Vestavia store, the corporate offices as an assistant buyer in Junior Dresses, and as an assistant department manager at Five Points West. I then went to work for View-Master toy company. I traveled in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, the panhandle of Florida, parts of Tennessee, and a couple of towns in Arkansas. After a year and a half, I was promoted to District manager of Southern California. My district also included parts of Nevada and Arizona. This is when I met the man who was to become my husband. We met briefly at a district managers meeting in Chicago. He had also recently been promote...Expand for more
d to District Manager ... of New England. A month later at Toy Fair in New York City we got to know each other better and fell hard for each other. After that he visited me 2 times in California and I visited him 2 times in Massachusettes. On my last visit I brought my cat to leave with him because I was going to be moving in. At the end of June, just over 5 months after we met, he flew out to California where we loaded up an unairconditioned U-Haul and drove cross country. We stopped in Alabama to pick up my old car from my parents since I had given up my company car along with my job. I didn't find work right away in Massachusettes, so I signed on with several temp agencies. One of the ones I worked for, Norrell, eventually hired me as their sales person. I saw an add in the paper for Lieberman Enterprises who provided the music and videos for some of the chains that my husband (still to be) called on. He called the buyer for one of the chains, they called Steve Peterson, their account manager with Lieberman. Steve called Dan Harrington, the local district manager. Dan called me for an interview. We met at a Friendly's restaurant and Dan offerred me the job on the spot. Six months later I was promoted to District Manager of Western MA. Then in July of 1991, Lieberman was sold to Handleman Company. I continued to work for Handleman for the next 15 1/2 years, though I stepped back to a rep position after my second son was born in 1993. This March I was laid off from Handleman because of sales force consolidation with the REPS sales force. Handleman had purchased REPS 2 or 3 years earlier. So I have now been unemployed for the last few months. I am trying to find something outside of retail that will still use the skills I have developed over the years.
September of 2007 I accepted a job as a Business Care Manager with AT&T Wireless. I am still in a learning phase after 10 months.
