Keith's Story
Life
Short version: Married, Living in Ignacio with 2 boys (10&12) who go to school in Terra Linda (small world). We are relatively active; enjoying tennis, golf, bike riding and travel.
Longer Version: A life bio in 4000 words--clearly, this would be impossible without leaving out most of the "stories" that make life fun. So, I'll focus on my career and family starting with college. I went to college at San Diego State University and right away started to add more color to life by joining a fraternity. I was Pledge President of the Gamma Theta class of Theta Chi. I had a blast at Theta Chi and San Diego. These were among the most enjoyable times of my life as the days were filled with laughter, new experiences, and FREEDOM to experiment. After graduating, I joined Mobil Oil and moved to Los Angeles, rooming with my best friend from College, Tony. Times were good--after all, I now had cash to spend and Mobil Oil was more than willing to pay for me to see the country and get my MBA. After graduating from USC with an MBA in 1984, Mobil closed the Los Angeles office-- creating a great opportunity for me to take my first extended vacation. I traveled around the Western US and into Canada with some friends. After about 6 months, I started to get bored and so went back to work--this time in the financial planning department of Mervyn's--at the time, the fastest growing arm of Dayton Hudson. I moved over to the East Bay to shorten the commute, began meeting new friends, enjoyed riding my bike and started teaching part time at St. Mary's College in Moraga; but something was missing. I had been reading the Wall Street Journal a lot and decided I needed to find something more inspiring--so I pursued a career as a Securities Analyst researching stocks. From that point, life seemed to re-accelerate. The career brought a lot of adrenalin and resulted in me moving to Milwaukee to head Capital Goods Research (companies that make up industrial America ie "In rust, we trust" :-)). There I met Iwona, my wife of nearly 14 years. We had a whirlwind romance, getting engaged at the Squaw Creek Lodge in Tahoe after only 7 weeks and getting married only 5 months later. A little over a year later, Patrick was born and 2 1/2 years later, Michael was born. By then, we had moved back to the Bay Area to work at Robertson Stephens. The career was in full throttle as Iwona spen...Expand for more
t her time raising the kids. We traveled a lot, but life was almost too hectic given the wild stock market and the demands of raising 2 active boys big on sports. Then, the crash hit. Robertson Stephens, a great partnership when I joined, had been sold 4 times since I joined and the new parent decided to shut her down instead of selling RSCO back to the partners. (There is clearly a few stories there!) I joined another company, but found the thrill was gone, so I decided to shift my priorities back to family and personal freedom. So, I took a sabbatical to spend more time with the family, travel some more, and work on my tennis/golf games. Today, I'm looking at re-entering the work world by starting up a real estate venture with an experienced friend. Tough time in the market, maybe, but that's when the real opportunities emerge. Come to the reunion at Stonetree on August 9, 2008 and tell me you story; it would be fun to catch up in person. Contact Ken Carter for details. He's keeping the master contact list Don't think about it, Just Do It!! See you there.
Workplace
Work is work, but for a while work was awesome, an inspiration. After SDSU, I joined Mobil Oil in the auditing/planning departments and learned alot about asking questions and running a business. After 3 years of working (and going to school at night), I took 6 months off and traveled up into Canada. I then returned to work--this time in the Finanical Planning area of Mervyn's Department store. Again, after 3 years (of coordinating the 1) monthly expense analysis, 2)yearly budgeting, and 3) 5 year capital planning processes)I left to become a stock/research analyst. This part of my career spanned
15 years and was awesome. I had the chance to run my own little business within a larger company. The job was challenging and provided a great opportunity to meet and interact with a lot of very smart people. It also involved a lot of travel (US and Europe, some Asia)and very little politics. Unfortunately, some took advantage of the situation and the industry is now over-regulated and no longer much fun. Consequently, many of the more experienced people left the industry. At the end of 2004, I decided to take an extended sabbatical and more thoroughly explore some other aspects of life. Now as 2007 approaches, I'm thinking of going back to more than private investing; got any good tips/ideas?
