Keith's Story
Life
I was born July 5, 1956 at George Air Force Base, CA (next to Victorville--now closed), where my Dad was stationed. The US Air Force sent us to Yokota Air Force Base in Japan, 1961-1964. In 1964, we moved to Santa Maria, where I attended Arellanes School from third through sixth grade. In 1968 we moved into town, near Fesler Junior High, which I attended. I attended SMHS and remember fondly football games; Brian Oye leading our section in cheers; the year we went unbeaten only to lose in the CIF championship game; the plays put on in Ethel Pope Auditorium; buddies in the music department; the excellence of Mrs. Chiado and Ms. Dunn as teachers; and how much I hated P.E. I graduated with the Class of 1974, then went to Allan Hancock College, where I earned my AA in 1976. I went to International Christian University in Japan (near Tokyo). I earned a BA in History at UC Santa Barbara, and continue to be a loyal Gaucho fan, especially of men's and women's basketball and men's soccer (we lost the 2004 College Cup--the NCAA championship--by penalty kicks at Home Deport Center in Carson--a game I will always remember! The men's basketball team was the last to beat UNLV before they won the NCAA championship in 1990!) I went to Princeton theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ (the same town as the famed university), where I earned a Master of Divinity degree. I entered the ministry (Presbyterian Church (US...Expand for more
A) in December of 1982 and was called as Associate Pastor of the Union Church of Los Angeles (in Little Tokyo, downtown) until March of 1990. Then for five years, I worked with a ministry known as Iwa, then based in Monrovia, CA. In March 1995 through August 2003 I was Pastor of Community Presbyterian Church in Three Rivers, CA (about 75 miles southeast of Fresno), the gateway to Sequoia National Park. I renewed my love for backpacking since I was so close to the Sierras. In 2000 I earned the Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. Since September 2003 I have been Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Altadena, CA (just above Pasadena). I have never married. In the summer of 2005 I fulfilled a lifelong dream of hiking the 220 miles of the John Muir Trail, from Yosemite National Park to the summit of Mt. Whitney, then out through Whitney Portal on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada range. Talk about beautiful! I continue to enjoy classical music, live theatre, restaurant-hopping, travel and cooking. The SMHS Reunion of Classes 1974-1977 (August 19, 2006) was terrific! Thanks to all who made it possible, and to old friendships renewed and new ones made! 2008-2010, I was Interim Pastor of 1st Filipino Pesbyterian Church,Azusa, CA. Currently caregiver to my Dad and his wife Carolyn seengart-ime, paid Christian ministry position of almost any kind, while caregiving.
