Keith's Story
Life
I have "reinvented" my career several times, although that was never a goal. I worked in consumer electronics right out of highschool. After doing that for 8-years I opened up a store in Delray Beach and specialized in commercial two-way radio equipment. I sold that business after a few years as I decided that I would rather be responsible for designing systems rather than selling them.
I worked for a number of companies in South Florida such as Bendix and IBM. After several years I ended up as the Sr Electrical Engineer for a Washington DC based engineering firm. Somehow I managed to drift into system software and then into information technology.
Once again I ended up starting and running my own business. After reaching some level of success (a lot of pork-n-beans and mac and cheese on the way) my former employer offered to buy out the company with a deal that I would have been hard-pressed to pass up! I did that for a few years but eventually found consulting more lucrative. Then two events changed everything. The dot.com bust of 2001 and the events of 9/11.
My consulting company developed a way for the government to efficiently and securely control access to its facilities. We now have systems installed from Florida to Alaska, from the East Coast to the West Coast.
We have continued to expand hiring additional engineers, support and administrative personnel, and of course marketing personnel.
We are now expanding into new but related products such as automated license plate readers, iris scanners, identity verification systems and the like.
We have enjoyed about 800% growth over the last few years.
One of these days maybe somebody will come along and want to buy us out again and I can eventually retire. But until then we enjoy the challenge and the travel. Solving security problems has turned out to be quite rewarding.
