Keith's Story
So finally found where the Story app was located so I can begin. Well, 2 weeks after graduation I moved to the Geogetown area of Washington D.C. and begin studies at Career Academy working towards a Certificate in "Broadcasting". Career Academy was an upscale vocational college and was a good experience for me. I lived in Geogetown with 3 other guys who were students and 2 were in the same course of studies. It was a six month course and in addition to the Certificate you also were trained to take the FCC 3rd Class Operators License exam which I did. The license enabled you to do the technical operation of a radio station. While at Career Academy I had a part-time job with Time/Life in the Call Center for subscription renewals. And in August I began a paid internship at WIYQ radio station in Johnstown, PA which was a good experience. My moniker was KC your country cousin. But working there convinced me I did not want a career as a DJ or radio announcer so after graduating I moved back home and applied to Albright College. I graduated from Career Academy in November and courses at Albright did not start until February (1974) so I took a job at Universal Concrete in Stowe. It was a dirty, dusty job but paid well. When February came I moved into North Hall and began my studies.
Going back while still at OJR I was dating a girl from Twin Valley, Shari, (whom I did marry and remain married to) and one of the motivating factors in going to Albright is that she was going to Reading Hospital School of Nursing. We started dating in '72 and while I dated other girls from Pottsgrove, Emmaus (long story) and OJR we finally got serious later in '73.
Anyway, I attended Albright from '74 until graduation in '78. Majored in Religion. While at Albright I had a number of PT jobs the most involved was being a Pastor at Cressona UM Church and Cumbola UM Church. (I don't believe either church is active any longer.) Upon graduation I attended Lancaster Theological Seminary in Lancaster, PA. I also got a position as Pastor at Mr. Hope UM Church and married Shari in 1977. I remained at Mt. Hope through 1983. The church closed its doors a few years later.
Leaving the pastoral ministry I took a job at a company in Ephrata, PA called Science Press (no longer around) in their shipping department. (Shari and I also moved into a home in downtown Lancaster ...Expand for more
in what is called Old Town Lancaster.) It was a nice temporary position lasting six months but I got a job with another company in Lancaster Consumer Supply (also no longer in business) in an inside sales position. I was there for almost four years and I enjoyed it but the compensation was a bit of an issue so I took a job at a local car dealer, Nolt AMC/Jeep/Renault (also no longer around) starting as sales person then used car manager. After seven years I left Nolt and went to Kelly Cadillac as a Lease Manager. Shari and I by this time had moved out of the city to a home near Millersville and then purchased a home in East Hempfield Twp. in 1986 where we remain today.
In 1996 I secured a sales position with Willow Valley Retirement Communities eventually becoming Sales Manager and then Director of Marketing and Sales before leaving in 2006. In 1999 I help start an entertainment company in Lancaster with my brother Scott and his partner Leigh called Zeotropolis Independent Film and Art. It was an interesting experience but we eventually had to close in 2005. Years later Leigh brought the company back and it still is going strong in Lancaster. In 2004 I started a tech company with my younger brother Curtis but remained at Willow valley until 2006 when I joined LYLAB Computer Solutions. In 2018 I sold my half of the company to my then business partner and retired. Shari being a little younger than I continued to work so I secured a part-time job at Waltz Vineyard Estate Winery where I still work today.
Working part-time at a winery is a great job. I enjoy learning all about the process of growing grapes, the harvest, processing, aging and blending and bottling. I work in the tasting rooms and also do deliveries. The wines are award winning and are great. I work around 20 hours a week when I work as we travel taking 9-10 trips each year. Shari retired a little over a year ago and we bought a Lance travel trailer. We have been all over the east coast camping and spend 6 weeks each winter in Florida. End of August we are taking 3 week trip to Finger Lakes and then up to Maine. I keep busy writing poetry which I have done since I was around 9 years old. For many years I collect stamps but sold my collection a couple years ago. I currently serve as the President of our HOA. All to say I have enough to do so I am not bored. (More to come)
