Keitha's Story

After finishing Roosevelt in 1962, I entered Howard University, and remained there until marrying Bill Lindsey in 1964. I had two boys, Lance and Keith-Sean, while working at the Dept. of Health, Education, and Welfare. I returned to D.C. Teacher's College and graduated in Elementary Education in 1971, and began teaching in the D.C. Public Schools. I received my M.Ed in teaching Reading, from Indiana University in 1974, and returned to teach,in D.C., retiring in 2003 from the system.. I lost my younger son, Keith-Sean, in 1989, at age 21, a year after he graduated from Providence College. He had a massive heart attack after playing a game of basketball. This continues to be devastating for our family. I am still teaching part-time at Paul Public Charter School, in D.C. Not only do I enjoy it, but more importantly, I am raising my lovely granddaughter, Ashley, and she has two more years in a private school.(enough said) She has been a true blessing to me, and watching her develop into an enthusiastic and intelligent young lady defies the constant myth about teen girls that currently prevails. My hope is that when I finally "come home," I will be able to assist other young girls in reaching their goals, and write a book about 40 plus years of teaching. UPDATE: I retired in June of 2014, finally! Three months late...Expand for more
r, I was offered a 6 hour per week Literacy coaching job in D.C., and I accepted it. I am still working there, but I also tutor an Autistic teenager 2 times per week, and it has been awesome to watch his progress. I love the opportunity to continue to make a contribution to society, at large, and young people, in particular. Since my last writing, my granddaughter graduated from Dickinson College, in Pennsylvania, in May of 2018. She had a double major, International Studies with a concentration in Sub-Saharan Africa, and French, and Francophone Studies. Finally, she has received a Fulbright Scholar Award, and in September, 2018, she will move to Cote' d'Ivoire, Africa to teach English in a French high school, for 1 academic year. I will go there to spend some time with her and to observe her teaching. I will finally get to give ME some TLC, After raising two sets of children, I think of Etta James and her record, "At Last," and while I miss my children, the evening of my life will be mine. Well, retirement didn't last too long. I am teaching again 3 days per week at a Christian Academy. This is a first for me, and quite intriguing. I have 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English and I love it!. Perhaps, I'll teach until I die, who knows! I hope everyone is enjoying the retirement years and maybe, unlike me, not working.
