Kelley's Story

The Younger Years My family moved a lot. I was born in Alamogordo where my dad worked in the Air Force. He was then transferred to Las Vegas, where we lived for 8 years. My parents then separated and my mom moved my brother and I up to New England where I went to school briefly in Elliot, ME, then Woodman Park Elementary in Dover, NH, then Portsmouth Middle School and Portsmouth High School, then Winnacunnet High School. Actually, I should've graduated from Memorial High School in Manchester, NH after my mom re-married and we moved in with my Stepfather Greg and Stepbrother Alex, but my mom convinced Winnacunnet into letting me finish there. After High School, I went to UNH and got a B.S. in Chemistry. Workplace After college I worked in Lowell, MA for a small company called Prime Organics. I stayed there for 4 months and then moved towards bigger and better things. I got a job for a biotech company in Cambridge, MA called Neogenesis doing combinatorial chemistry. I worked with them for almost 3 years and decided it was time to learn something new. I then headed up to Billerica, MA for a company which used to be a part of Bristol-Myers Squibb but is now a private company, called Lantheus Medical Imaging. I worked there doing mainly medicinal chemistry. Most of my projects were based on radiolabelling for cardiovascular diseases (basically the crap you have to take before you get an MRI or a CT). After three years there, with the company losing focus on their R&D side of things, I decided it was time to change yet again so I got a job in Cambridge, MA working for a small Biotech company called Momenta. I started out doing process chemistry and helped the group answer FDA questions and file an ANDA for a generic drug of Copaxone, a drug used for Multiple Sclerosis patients. After a year working with them, I moved into the Manufacturing Sciences group. I now oversee the manufacture of our top drug substance, of which the drug product, Enoxaparin, was approved by the FDA in July of 2010. Currently, I collaborate with our CMO and other functional groups in my organization, review batch records and deviations, keep track of scheduling and trending of the process, and handle any change requests and DCR's that our CMO brings to us. I am also obtaining a Graduate Certificate in Project Management to help further my career path. The Fun Stuff Outside of school and work, I've done some travelling to various...Expand for more
places. I've been to Quebec, Paris, England (all over), Ireland (Mostly all along the coastline but a few inland areas as well), Aruba, Playa del Carmen, and Costa Rica. In the States, I've been to CA (San Diego, LA, San Francisco and the surrounding areas), Texas (where my dad worked for NASA), Florida (where my mom and Stepdad now live) and the Keys, All over New England, NY, and Michigan (where my brother graduated from University of Michigan). I've gone sky diving, white water rafting, rock climbing, hiking, and camping. I love being in the outdoors. I used to ski but because of my renaud's disease I now snowshoe...keeps me warmer. I'm a huge Patriots fan and have been to a few of their games. I've also been to numerous Red Sox games, though I primarily go to people watch, not so much for the game. I've been to a few concerts, including Dave Matthews, PInk Floyd, Live, MixFest (feat. Def Lepard), Tom Petty, AC/DC, and Paul McCartney. The Not So Fun Stuff Life is a roller coaster and it's certainly been quite a ride. My Father died in August of 1998. He shot a man and himself out of jealousy and manic depression. My grandmother blamed it on my mother because they got a divorce (my dad's parents are very religious people). The funeral that my grandparents held for my dad was not a funeral that you would want to bring your children to. Basically, the priest told us how my dad was going to hell...yeah. Then my mom's parents died (one of an anneurism, the other of fatty liver disease). I have also had the misfortune of seeing a few friends die along the way...but the most recent one has been a little rough. In July of 2010, my stepbrother Alex died of viral pneumonia (we think) at the very young age of 27. He was a great brother (better than my other brother!) and the family misses him dearly. This last death has shown my family and I that, even though we are all spread around the country, it doesn't give us an excuse to not see each other. Since his death, my parents and I have become more close, trying to see each other more than we used to (twice a year). It's also taught us that life is way too short. I try to live my life every second of every day. I don't want to miss out on anything. I want to experience the world and what it has to offer and I want to experience it with the ones I love, because they could leave you in an instant. I end with a great saying: Live, Laugh, and Love :)
