Kelly's Story

I know I'm super late in the Classmates game! I like to say I fit in at Ramona "like pork ribs at a Kosher wedding." I was considered weird because I actually read books voluntarily and didn't fit in with the "yee-haw" mentality at Ramona in the 1970's. All I wanted from high school was out. Objective was to get a job, a car and the hell out of Ramona. Which I did a few times but always came back. And Ramona Union School District had an amazing special ed program for my autistic son. Moved out of my parents' house in the summer of 1978 and lived in Ocean Beach with two gay men and I have been a proud "Fairy Godmother" and supporter of gay rights and have been going to gay events since 1977!! Got married in 1982, son born at Palomar hospital in 1983 and became a widow in the spring of 1984 as my husband died in a tragic motorcycle accident. I've had multiple boyfriends but never remarried. I've rented in Linda Vista, Escondido and Ramona since becoming a widow. Finally became a property owner when I inherited my mother's home in Ramona when she passed in 2007. School and work: Other than 3 months at Palomar JC and a certificate for graphic design from City College in 1985, I was never very interested in going to college. Again, my focus through school was to graduate, get a job, buy a car and GTFO of Ramona and never come back. Didn't quite work that way.....I spent most of my high school years watching my sister screwing around at Palomar College so she wouldn't have to get a job. I've worked in banking, a...Expand for more
t a publishing company in Downtown SD called Green Tiger Press and as the manager at the Fashion Valley & North County Fair Hallmark stores. Currently I'm the office manager at a mobile home park in Escondido. In more recent news I have been sober since January 2023 after a hospital stay due to alcohol poisoning. Blacking out then getting my stomach pumped gave me a huge wakeup call. I hated growing up out here but now I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. My perspective started to shift around 1986 when my son was 3. We were living with my parents and he was still being seen by the newborn follow-up clinic at Mercy Hospital. The coordinator there recommended that we start him in Special Ed and Ramona actually had one of the best programs. Plus there were horror stories on the news about San Diego Unified's program. A bus driver dropped off a severely disabled child in his front yard with no parent there and didn't even notice that the poor thing was dead when they dropped him off. So my thinking became, "Okay, we're staying in North County until he graduates." Well, I'm still here.....my mother used to rhapsodize about the freedom out here and I would look at her like she was crazy. It took me years to understand. A few years ago I stayed the whole weekend at a friend's condo in Ocean Beach and had the place to myself from Friday afternoon on. It was great being in the city again but I was reminded of what I didn't miss, the traffic and crappy parking. Feel free to say hi! Hope all fellow bulldogs are well!
