Ken's Story

Am married with a son and a daughter both of whom have graduated from University with Education Degrees (as the saying goes the apple 'didn't' fall too far from the tree as both my wife and myself are retired teachers). Presently, however, I am "partially retired" as I still go in as a substitute teacher (TOC). I still enjoy the work and, also, do some tutoring. Spare time is used to watch BNN for stock market news and other sources to research stocks and bonds, watch TV in the evenings (see list of TV programs), go for walks along the shore or through the woods and do Sudoku and Calcudoku (also known as KenKen). My wife likes to visit "exotic"places (this fall she is off to do a couple of safaris in Africa) (she's been on a Machu Picchu trek; gone to China; and walked from the east coast of Spain to the west coast) around the world while I stay on the N.A.continent due to alot of food allergies. I prefer road trips to Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and the states of the West Coast. Went to Hawaii (Oahu) recently for my daughter's wedding (March/2011) and I loved it......I have to get back there soon....And now we have 2 grandchildren on on the way (Jan. and May......am no longer substitute teaching and am enjoying doing "nothing" but I can't believe how many "nothings" there are to do each day!!! Went to Maui last Christmas for our son's wedding and liked it better than Oahu (daughter's wedding)....now have 2 grandchildren.....girl and a boy.....took a lot of photos in Maui especially sunsets and flowers and kids in the ocean with my new Canon t5i.....learning how to use digital now as I've been a non digital (Maxxum 400si with a 28-200zoom)....Canon has a 18-1...Expand for more
35zoom but am thinking of buying a 55-250mm....taking lots of photos of the kids ..... and keep finding things to do everyday.....still doing Calcudoku on Patrick Min's site......lots of math to keep the brain active!!!(picture above is in Maui, Jan 30th, 2013)....update: my daughter had a baby girl last September And now another grandchild (male) on the way (July)......we will then have 2 boys and 2 girls and have been told "that's it"........ Now my wife has PD and has had it going on 16 years now and had to give up trips about 6 years ago. As for me starting this time last year severecramps circling my body just below ribs and to take hydromorphone mid afternoon. Docs were puzzled as gall bladder had tests and was OK, then pancreas, then kidneys, then stomach with a biopsy and all samples were good. And 8 days later daily pain just stopped (my Sister suffered the same symptoms). Docs in Victoria were stumped with her too as it just stopped. For me l was 75. Then a bout of sepsis which I did not know about until ambulance and NRGH where after body fluid samples were analyzed and Doc said s as really lucky as I had had a near death experience. After that (78) l was hospitalized for number of reasons—longest was 72 days (last 2 were infected kidney with a tube with camera and lazer and same procedure for prostate but in this case he literally lazered the whole prostate. (end of Nov) and still with catheter and walker and last of multiple visits was Feb 15 when catheter was removed. Now l have been doing specific exercises and eating (a lot of both) and can walk about without walker for short periods. Am 79 and slowly getting back to a normal life!!!
