Ken's Story
Life
I am single and live in a small town in the high plains of Arizona. I have lived in six states and retired in August 2020.
Unique roommates?
I remember most of them, and lost touch with all but one of them. One 18-year-old roommate at California State University, Fresno, was self-conscious about his height. He was upset that he was not attending the University of California, Davis, on a scholarship from his father's employer.
He played the kazoo and did Groucho Marx imitations. Unfortunately, our personalities did not mesh, and I got paired with another roommate during the spring semester.
Unfortunately, I clashed with my second roommate. He watched television into the wee hours, until I complained. Then, he started hanging out with his friends.
However, I think I might have been friends with both of them had we not shared a cramped room.
Food?
The cafeteria food for the dorms in Fresno was abominable, except for breakfasts. The food services for the dorms disgraced ethnic foods. ...Expand for more
Once, food services prepared lobster (not high quality), and boasted to the student newspaper about it. But even though the food was horrible, many students practically licked their plates, apparently because they came from poor backgrounds.
Workplace
I spent four decades off and on in the newspaper business.
For the most part, being a reporter involves performing a variety of rote tasks: going out on an assignment, visiting police departments, attending meetings of city councils and other governmental bodies, and returning to the office to write stories.
I have interviewed both of Arizona's senators as well as presidential candidates. I've met people ranging from ordinary folks whose names rarely see print to wealthy, famous and powerful people.
On occasion, I wrote a news or feature story that gained statewide or national play. You can read my work by Googling me.
The Internet age has transformed the business. The Great Recession and COVID-19 devastated it. I chose a good time to leave.
