Ken's Story
Life
I graduated from MSU in 1972 and returned to Polson to ranch with my family. My first daughter was born there in 1973. My second daughter came when we lived in Great Falls in 1975. I worked for Kmart and the Bon Marche in GTF. I was transferred to Boise, ID in 1978 by the Bon. I began my career in the Boise Fire Department in 1981. I retired as a Senior Captain at the end of August 2005. I have one grandson, and two granddaughters. I have 7 foster daughters scattered around the world.
In 2006, I took a job managing a mobile airport control tower for Firecom. I started the season in New Mexico on the Bear Fire and worked my way back up to Idaho in August and September. Due to the shortage of resources, I was able to earn my certification as an Aircr...Expand for more
aft Base Radio Operator (ABRO), which is like an air traffic controller. In 2008 I qualified as a Public Information Officer Type 2. I had team assignments with the Blue Mountain Type 2 Interagency Incident Management Team, ORCA Type 2 Incident Management Team, and Northwest Oregon Incident Management Team in Oregon.
We moved to the Austin, Texas area in 2011 to be closer to our families. In 2015 I went back to work as a Fire Dispatcher for Williamson County. I retired from that job in 2019.
We sold our Texas home in 2021 and moved to Greenville, SC to help with a church plant.
I'm still going out on forest fires as a PIO.
We respond to all risks, but primarily manage large forest fires.
I'm an Extra Class Amateur Radio Operator; my callsign is K7MAL.
