Ken's Story
Life
Write a bio??? That'll take forever! Let me just hit the major points. After Freehold Twp HS:
I went to Tufts on an Engineering Scholarship, and earned an Engineering degree. During that time I met my ex-wife Joanne and we got married before my senior year of undergrad. Joanne and I were married for 19 years and had 5 kids together (3 boys and 2 girls). We divorced 2 years ago. I met another woman, Lisa, got engaged, and we recently called it off. So, I've pretty much been engaged or married for all but a very short time since I was in High School. hmmm....
After college went to work in NY as a stockbroker. At 26, I was promoted to branch manager for a brokerage firm. At 39, I started my own brokerage firm (The Nelson Group). We advise corporate clients and affluent individuals. (I'm looking to hire good brokers...)
I've also gone back for more schooling. I earned my MBA from Duke in 2001. After graduation, I was asked to come back and help teach a few courses. So I've done some guest lecturing in Duke's MBA Program since 2001.
At Duke, I was one of our class leaders (Those from FTHS probably won't be surprised... remember those election posters on the ceiling - even in the gym??! or the election banner across the front of the school? - LOL)
After graduation, I was asked to join the board of Duke's largest Alumni Association (17,000 members). Then I became Treasurer, VP, and President. I've recently stepped down from the board, but still show up for some functions.
Unfortunately...Expand for more
, it's football season, and Duke's Football team reminds me a lot of FTHS football - when I was there we would win, what 1 game a year?... Now FTHS's Soccer team - that's another story... kinda like Duke's Basketball...
I'm very active especially with the kids. I'm into weightlifting/bodybuilding, soccer, golf, surfing, and skiing. The kids all are pretty good skiers, soccer players, disc golfers, and swimmers. Two of them are gymnasts, two of them surf, and they all play tennis. They're also a lot smarter than I was. They amaze me. They're all very good at chess, but I don't encourage them to get as obsessed with it as I was. The kids are 19, 11, 9, 8, and 8. Yes, I have twins... (boy + girl). I coach 3 of the kids soccer teams, and used to coach my oldest son too. The kids are all excellent soccer players and 2 of the 3 boys (Brett and Grant) have won State Soccer Championships. - Trent's team is favored to win the State Championship in mid-June 2008.
Most of you knew my brother Keith (one year younger). He's doing very well, and has semi-retired down to Boca Raton. He and my little brother Kris (He went to Howell and is 4 1/2 years younger) work for Dan Gittleman. This is their second company together. They sold the first one to Hewlett Packard in 2001. Howie Kwan (FTHS 84) has also been involved with both companies.
I live in North Carolina. I've been down here since I left Manhattan in the fall of 1988.
Send me a message, if you've read this far.
