Kendrick's Story
Life
Ken S. says, "Retirement is the best job I have ever held". Forty years after graduating from North Salem High School including 6 years of university and graduate school, 2 years in aerospace industry, 3 years as a federal employee, and 29 years in state government I am enjoying world travel, Elderhostels, volunteer work, family gatherings, tracing family roots and outdoor recreation.
Our two sons live nearby. The eldest is finishing college on GI benefits after surviving 3.5 years of US Army active duty during the "W" Bush "War on Terror" including an asian deployment for 18 months. The youngest is making career moves in the personnel staffing industry.
Travel so far has taken us to: North-, Central- and South America, all 50 US States, 7 Canadian provinces, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Nicarauga, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Ecuador,Peru, Chile, Brazil and Argentina. In SE Asia we have visited: South Korea, Japan, China, Tibet, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar (Burma) and Hong Kong. Down under we have traveled in Australia (including Tasmania) and New Zealand. Central Asia travels include: Turkey, Israel, India, Bhutan and the Seychelles. African explorations include: Tanzania, Kenya, Morocco, and Tunisia. European countries visited include: UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway.

lude: Northwest Medical Teams (6 teams to Mexico); Habitat for Humanity (6 homes); NE Neighbors (neighborhood ass'n Bd); Timberline Ski Area (19 years as a Mountain Host volunteer); Faith Lutheran Church (Treasurer, Council Member, 4 term Council President); Professional ass'n offices held in ASME, NCWM, USMA, WWMA.
We still are hiking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing, camping, boating, golfing and more. Fly fishing has entering the picture recently, as well as digital photography. More mundane pursuits include yard work, property management, electro-mechanical tinkering and keyboarding Emails and letters to our political leaders and representatives.
As editor of the local Finnish-heritage newsletter (Salemmalainen Silta) I have learned alot about tracing my Finnish paternal grandparents old country roots prior to their homesteading in "New Finland" (Brocket) North Dakota. Also my maternal grandparents German heritage roots in western North Dakota, Ohio, and Prussia. My spouse's Swedish roots are also of interest and we have shared visits with her relatives both here at in Sweden.
Otherwise, I still cheer on my favorite college sports teams, the Oregon State University Beavers and the Purdue University Boilermakers, and attend games when I can. I Follow the 2006 and 2007 OSU Beavers college baseball team as they did a repeat as champs in the college baseball world series.
