Ken's Story

College A very simple academic biography: I went to the Naval Academy to play football. At the end of my Plebe season I spent a month in the hospital, so I decided to stop football and graduate instead. I knew that I had a job if I went that way. A Master's degree was a necessity if I wanted to be competitive for promotion to Commander. So I attended Central Michigan University at numerous remote campuses in the Maryland/DC area. As I approached retirement, I needed a current degree. Veterans' benefits wouldn't pay for another Masters, but they'd pay for a Doctorate. I completed my Ph.D. from Old Dominion University in 2001. Marriage & Family I dated Andrea Leeds (from Beverly) for the first time on 22 November 1969. We continued to date through the four monastic years at the Naval Academy and were married in the Academy chapel on 8 June 1974. Our oldest son, Christopher, was born in Naples, Italy in 1978 (while we were stationed in Sigonella, Sicily). Matthew and Allison were born in Annapolis, MD in 1982 and 1983 respectively, while I was stationed at the Naval Academy teaching leadership. Workplace I was a Naval Officer for 22 years. During that time I was designated a Naval Aviator and flew helicopters, taught leadership at the Naval Academy, and served as a logistics planne...Expand for more

I purposefully chose that date to spit in the face of superstition ... it spat back. The surgery was not successful in containing the cancer. I have subsequently engaged in four clinical trials at Johns Hopkins. The trial in 2006 was a combination of hormone and chemotherapy. Since the vast majority of my hair fell out from the chemo, I decided to keep it clean shaven. To paraphrase what Arlen Specter said when he lost his hair to chemo: I had three choices ... wear a hat ... buy a toupe' ... or shave my head and become a sex symbol. He chose to do none of the above and I chose the latter ... unfortunately, it's not all it's cracked up to be.
