Kenneth's Story

Life I was born on July 28, 1953 in the town of Rivers, Manitoba. My dad, a member of the Royal Canadian Engineers (Army), was stationed at the Military Base near there. In 1960 Dad was transferred back to Ottawa. We first live in a cottage near Clarence ON. then in September we moved to Mann Ave in Ottawa where I attended St. Joseph Separate School till Christmas. Over the holidays we moved 32 miles South onto 100 acres of land near the small Settlement of Heckston. Heckston is about 7 miles Southeast of Kemptville. It was here that I grew up. Grades 2 to 6 were spent at SS No. 1, a local one room school in Heckston. It was here that I had my first major crush on Dawn Sloan. She was such a sweet and innocent creature, which I believe spoiled me for all the rest. Over these many years, she still remains in my thoughts. Grades 7 and 8 were at the newly build, 4 room, South Gower Public School. After graduation I did grades 9 and 10 at North Grenville District HS in Kemptville. Grade 9 introduced me to the school football team and my next crush. She was a lovely young lady in my homeroom class by the name of Marcia Colman. Unfortunately she was dating an upperclassman and I was shy and intimidated. During grade 10 I joined the school soccer team. Our class was shipped down to South Grenville District HS in Prescott, ON to complete grades 11 and 12. While here I joined the tack and field team and met my high school sweetheart, Peggy Reid. No lasting romance developed, but we still remain very close and good friends. I graduated from high school in 1971 and I went on to study Architecture at Algonquin College. Unfortunately I left before before completing my studies. During 1975, I thumbed my way out to the Western Provinces for a few months of exploration and looking for work opportunities. Eventually I returned back home in late October. Shortly afterward obtained employment at Knox Timber in Kemptville till I was laid off, in 1978. In November of 1978 I lost my mother to cancer. It was approximately 6 week from the time the doctors discovered she had cancer. Mom spent her remaining days being cared for by the competent staff of the Ottawa General Hospital. ed in the studies of Philosophy and Religion at University of Ottawa for the Fall and Winter terms of 1979-80. Unfortunately, I did not do very well that year. In the fall of 1980 I obtain part-time and later full-time employment at the Ottawa Citizen in the Mailing Department. I remained there till 1985. In 1985, again feeling a Calling to the Priesthood and a Religious life, I joined a Catholic Religious Order. This Order was the Franciscan Capuchins - Order of Friars Minors, Capuchin (OFM, Cap.). I was with them for 5 years. During my Novitiate I spent a year in Victoria, KS learning about the Order and how to live the life of a Friar. After my Novitiate, I pursued studies in Theology and Religion at St Jerome's College (part of University of Waterloo) and University of Toronto. I did much better this time. However, in 1990, The Order concluded that I was not suited for their particular way of life and therefore released me that summer. From 1990 to 1999 I worked in the security field at King's Landing in Toronto until a stupid mistake on my part ended my job. My Dad passed away at the age of 84, in February of 1999. The same time I lost my job. Not knowing what to do next I decided to move to Edmonton, AB. I stayed with a good friend till I got myself established. I worked for a while in Security and also did some Building Maintenance till I ran into problems with my employer. In August of 2002 I obtained employment with Waste Management Services Inc. at their Recycling Plant. Workplace Over the years I have held various jobs. Some of those were tempary positions, others summer employment while going to school. I have been with Waste Management Services Inc. since August of 2002. I have had my ups and downs but my overall experience with this company is quite enjoyable. My previous job was in Building Maintenance as well as doing Secuity. I joyed my time there and learned a few new tricks along the way. However, because of personal problems between my pevious employer and myself and the fact I no longer desired to spend cold winter nights preforming exterior security patrols, I decided to change my employment situation. I now enjoy an up beat environment and a much improved financial package with my present employer.
