Kenneth's Story
Bringing the profile up to date....
We've lived near on in Marshalltown now for 12 years.
I've been working with the vocal music department at Marshalltown Community Schools, grades 5-12 now for 11 years, and I'm in my 10th as organist in an ELCA Lutheran Church.
My career as an active UMC pastor ended in 2001 with 'incapacity leave' due to COPD and clinical depression. I gradually resumed teaching beginning in 2002, and was appointed organist at Elim Lutheran in 2004. Bonnie and I met in Indiana in my very first parish there, we married in 1971. Anna, our daughter is 34, working at Mesquakie Casino in Tama, Iowa; and lives with us
We lived in St. Anthony, Iowa from 2001 to 2007; renting the old rectory from Sacred Heart Church. The 104 year old church burned due a lighting strike in June of 2007, and we moved to Marshalltown in September. I'm 15 min...Expand for more
utes from church, and 10-15 min. from each of the three schools where I play. I work with 5 performing ensembles. I had 9 up until two years ago, then the chorus schedules changed, as did my hours.
I oficially retired from the UMC in 2010, duly filed for SS after I turned 67.....so I guess one could call me a 'senior citizen' although my HS kids have told me that they don't believe I'm 67.....They say I smile and laugh too much to be that 'old'.....sheesh!
So, the music goes on, and will continue as long as the fingers, voice, and feet are viable. I sincerely hope I've got 20-25 more years left.....who knows? I'm just glad that the initial health problems didn't take me down all the way, as they easily could have. I'm thankful to be alive, working, making art and music, telling terrible puns and jokes and everything......
