Kenny's Story

Workplace I retired from a career with the military in 1996 and have since tried several different avenues. I first took a position with the Federal Aviation Administration as an Airway Systems Specialists. A fancy name for an electronics technician maintaining radio communications and navigational aids in the National Airspace System. I first started with them in Albuquerque, NM for 2 years and then relocated to Midland, TX for another year. I obtained the Civil Service grade of GS-12. After 3 years with the FAA I took a position with the Department of Defense at Edwards Air Force Base, CA as an Aircraft Electronics Technician installing electronic modifications in Air Force test aircraft. I didn't last very long in this position working in the hot California desert during the summer. I then thought I wanted to do something different but something I always wanted to do at least once. I became a cross country truck driver. I first drove 18 wheeler for KLLM transport for four months then with Morgan Driveaway for another 2 years. I seen a lot of country real fast. I stopped driving in 2001 to care for my dad as he was dying in Eureka, CA. I went back into retirement after that until the fall of 2004 when I started a small wireless networking (WiFi) business in the remote area of Presidio, TX for travelers in their recreational vehicles. Being in a very remote area I brought Internet access in by satellite. The business took off after that and I became a dealer for NomadISP Anywhere Hotspots and for StarBand satellite Internet systems. In August 2005, we bought a 50% share of a 38' Chris-Craft Roamer on Lake Michigan and the remaining 50% in August 2007. UPDATE: I came out of "retirement" in 2014 by starting my own recreational boating business in Northeast Wisconsin. I run a boat rental business (canoes, kayaks and small fishing boats, and a charter tour boat. You can fine me at owfish com. Military I first entered the US Army right out of high school when I was 17 years old. I came in with some knowledge of the military after being in the California Cadet Corps (similar to JROTC) for 3 years. I wanted to be a helicopter pilot but the recruiter told me I was too young so I went into helicopter maintenance (UH-1). Went through Basic Training at Ft Lewis, WA then Advanced Training at Ft Rucker, AL. I finished top in my class with the highest score the Army had at that time. First assignment was at Ft Rucker's Hanchy AHP. They didn't need any aircraft mechanics so they put me in Flight Operations. Six months later I was sent to Vietnam where I flew as a Door Gunner and worked in Flight Operations with the 61st Assault Helicopter Company at Lane AHP (AnSon), and the 201st Aviation Company at Camp McDermott (Nha Trang). After my aircraft was shot up I never really wanted to fly again. After Vietnam I served with the 1st Aviation Company (Prov) 1st Infantry Division at Ft Riley, KS, the 178th Assault Support Helicopter Company (CH-47s) at Ft Sill, OK, C Troop 3rd Squadron 4th Cavalry 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii, and as the Airfield Operations Chief at Bradshaw AAF, Pohauloa Training Area, Hawaii where I was discharged from active duty. After a 2-year break-in-service...Expand for more
I joined the 1113th Transportation Company, California Army National Guard as a truck driver, then transferred to the 201st Combat Communications Squadron, Hawaii Air National Guard as a generator mechanic. I moved to Oklahoma where I transferred into the 137th Airlift Wing, Oklahoma Air National Guard (C-130s) where after 6 months I went into the Military Technician Program. After 1-½ years I transferred to the Oklahoma Army National Guard at the Lexington Army Aviation Support Facility and served with Company B 1/245th Aviation Battalion (Special Operations)(Airborne), Aviation Troop Command, Detachment 3 HHC 1/132nd Command Aviation, and Detachment 1 Company L 245th Aviation. I retired from the military in 1996 after serving 11 years Active Army, 4 years with the Air National Guard, and 9 years with the Army National Guard. My Army MOSs includes 67N3FA2, 68N3O, 71P2OA2, and 93P3OA2. My Air Force AFSCs includes 27152, 43150D, and 54252. I'm a disabled military veteran making the best of my life and a double retiree. I'm retired from the US military with over 40 years of military service credit for retirement. Of those years, I wore the uniforms of both the US Army and the US Air Force. I'm also retired from the US Federal Civil Service with over 23 years of service. I served with both the Department of Defense (US Army and US Air Force) and the Department of Transportation (Federal Aviation Administration). My highest civilian grade held was as a GS-12, which is equivalent to a Major or Lieutenant Commander in the military. My ancestral family are Native American (Cherokee) and European Immigrants (Swedish, English, and French). I have historical ties with the 17th century North African Coast corsairs know as the "Sallee Rovers". Currently I'm a US Coast Guard Licensed Captain and ordained by the First Nation Church and Ministry as a Ceremonial Minister and Officiant. In 2002, I married the love of my life, Barbara Pesicka. We had known each other since our teenage days back in 1971. In 2003, we sold our home in Norman, Oklahoma and moved into our motorhome and traveled from coast to coast. After living on the road for 8 years, we leased a waterfront cottage overlooking the bay of Green Bay in the historical community of Oak Orchard, Wisconsin. Barbara passed away on Thanksgiving Day 2012 after a long struggle with diabetes. In July 2013, I purchased a house on the Oconto River in Oconto Wisconsin where I started rebuilding my life by forming my recreational boating business. On July 19th, 2014, I married Nancy Benchley of Menominee, Michigan. Nancy's husband had passed away 2 days after my wife Barbara.
