Kent's Story
Life
I left Joplin in 1984 to join the Air Force. I wanted to get out and see the world, but I spent my entire six year enlistment in North Dakota (Hell does freeze over).
I had it REALLY good for a while. I have worked for Procter & Gamble and Hewlett-Packard. I was making a great salary, but HP laid off 2,900 people worldwide in Nov 2005. I found myself (according to CNN) in the fourth worth job market in the country. After spending 18 months unsuccessfully looking for a new job, losing my house, the first new car I ever purchased and declaring bankruptcy I had little choice but to move back to Joplin. I currently am the General Manager for a Joplin branch of a national, billion dollar company. I also own a small percentage in a family owned, local Joplin business. I am not lonely. I am the happiest person I know.
I have a stepdaughter who is 29 years old that I am still very close with even though her mother and I are no longer together. I still consider her my daughter. I have to granddaughters ages 9 and 8. I hold the title of Grampy with great pride. I just wish they were closer than Albuquerque, NM. This year my daughter was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. She was in stage four and given six months to live. As of July 2008 she is currently undergoing chemo therapy.
Military
I worked in the Photo Lab at Grand Forks AFB. I feel it's one of the best jobs I have ever had. It was always cool to be able to go into all areas of the base that most people don't see...and photographed things I cannot talk about because of the high security rating.
