Kent's Story

I was born in Harvey Station NB. Seems to me, I spent most of my time in the woods, crawling through barns, or fishing, in Harvey or Oromocto Lake. Started school in Harvey Elementary, with Miss Moffat. Wonderful group of kids. My grand parents were very important to me, one Grandfather was a barber and the other was a CPR station agent. My Grandmothers were wise, great cooks and very patient. Harvey was and is very special to me, it seemed like an idyllic place with its beautiful farms and an over-all sense of self sufficiency. My dad worked on the railroad and it was a time of transition so we moved around. We moved to Macadam then back to Harvey , then in Grade 6 we moved to Woodstock NB. This was like moving to the big city to me. I missed Harvey and its wilderness and had a hard time starting over in a new school; however, I soon began to really like Woodstock. Sports came into my life in a big way. Island Park featured a huge indoor rink, so hockey, then basketball, then swimming, and then came dancing at the "Y" on Saturday night. Needless to say school became more of a struggle. Woodstock had a wonderful library and I spent a lot of time there too. I discovered a number of things in Woodstock, great teachers, music and the arts, girls, and love. Had some wonderful friendships there. Our next move was to the city of Saint John NB. again in the middle of the school year so my academic career was being challenged. Saint John was a real adventure. Finally ended up in Saint John High. Abandoned sports except for a bit of Rugby (great sport) and discovered the arts. A dear friend of mine in...Expand for more
troduced me to her godfather who in turn introduced me to photography. I spent most of my time trying to master that and am still doing so. Saint John High had some of the finest teachers in the world, drama, sports and academia combined to create an exciting environment, and it was, the "Sixties". I had some wonderful friends and the most memorable relationships of my life. It became clear to me in high school that I was destined to be in the arts, and photography was my chosen path. Moved to Montreal for a short time. Loved it. Spent a lot of time at McGil University,(I shared a house with the president of the McGill Film Society) Then got a job working for what was then the largest independent film company in Canada, Crawley Films Ltd. I was finally in the film business. Became a cinematographer, then was asked to join the National Film Board. It has been wonderful being in the film business. I have travelled all over Canada, been around the world a few times and met some of the most amazing people you can imagine. I shot and still shoot documentaries primarily, but enjoy shooting drama as well. I got married to a wonderful woman, had three amazing children, now, they are adults and they still amaze me, got divorced and am re- married to a very special woman who is also a filmmaker. We live over-looking beautiful St. Margaret's Bay near Halifax. We have a company, Sea to Sea Productions. Our most recent production, "NORM" was aired on CBC Newsworld's "The Lense" on December 2nd. "Norm" continues to inspire an appreciative audience and has received a number of awards. Now what to do next?
