Keri's Story

Life I was married in December 1986 to a wonderful man named Robert, and we will be celebrating our 25th anniversary on December 26th, 2011. WOW!! We are learning to be the empty-nest parents that try not to sit around the house being boring...but that is a whole new world!! I am so happy to be in the classroom again. I learned a great deal about being an educator during those last 2 years I was a Reading Coach at Miami, but I desired to have students again since that is my first love, teaching boys and girls. Teaching split grades at Hudson has been challenging yet wonderfully refreshing. It was so rewarding at the end of my first school year at Hudson to receive the Teacher of the Year award. WOW! Did that one surprise me. I took a break from teaching for about 6 years when we had our only daughter, Kirsten, who is now attending Park University in Parkville, MO. She is a great student and on the Dean's List every semester (4) so far. I am very proud of her. She received her Gold Award in Girl Scouts. Again, I am so very proud of her. We've been in our home for nearly 12 years now. It still needs work. But we have repainting it slowly. It is currently half done. I have to wait for some scaffolding-anyone hav some I can borrow?. Getting scaffolding for the second story will be a job! School My biggest crush? I am not telling... I have got to say that in high school I was a really different kind of kid. Looking back, (isn't that funny to say that?) I think that the teachers that influenced me the most at Edison HS were Mr. Nicholson-my art teacher, Mr. Garfield-one of my Social Studies (SS) teachers, Mr. Shimpock-another SS teacher, Mrs. Krausnik- again, another SS teacher (govt), and Sir Oliver Smith-my freshman english teacher. I am sure that if I thought about this for any lengthy amount of time I would come up with more names. However, these 5 individuals come to mind immediately. Mr. Nick was my best time memory, because I LOVE art--gotta have art-- and Mr. Garfield introduced me to political cartooning and just how wonderful social studies can be! Then there was Mr. Shimpock who helped me truely understand who Count Draco was, while threatening to impale me as an example of a student that talked during a lesson--I often share that story with my students... While, Mrs. K helped me understand gerrymandering and the fine art of politics and really everything I NEVER wanted to learn about government and now I teach it to others... and lastly...but NOT least, Sir Ol...Expand for more
iver, what can I say? Hummmm, I thought that I would DIE in his class and yet I am a reading teacher and I share that "JOY" of learning to read and to become awesome writers with so many children, and I laugh when I think of all great reading and papers we had to do in his room--and complained the whole time outside of his earshot. He was simply a great teacher, as were the 4 previous people I mentioned. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to be a student of theirs. They influenced my enthusiasm in the classroom and in the way you must share the joy of learning early on, to get that "hook" into each child and keep them in school and have a good time learning as well. Would I do it all over again? I guess that I would have to say that it was not always easy and I did not always "fit" in, however, I truely loved and still do love school, so yes, I would do it again. But you know the saying--I wish I had the knowledge I have now and could go back and do it again with this knowledge...there would be some serious changes! College I enjoyed my college years. I spent my final 3 years at Park. I made a lot of friends and connected with several people. I wish I could get in touch with some of them! I am seriously considering getting my masters during the next few years, however I have a child in the college zone, so it may be a while... you know it is the $$$$ thing. Workplace Well, being asked to write about work...I guess you should know that I don't consider my profession work. I truly enjoy what I do and I know that I AM making a difference with each child that I work with. Sometimes it is "unsaid", while other times I actually get feedback. A few summers ago I got some thank you cards from some old students that really made my day! And I actually had 2 first graders tell me during the last week of summer school one year "Thank you Mrs. Schow." I asked what for and they said for teaching them what they know now. WOW! Tell me--what job gives such great satisfaction and so sincere and immediate? I LOVE it and plan to continue teaching as long as I keep loving it! What job do you know that does that for you? I currently teach at a K-8 school, and there are not many left in Missouri. I am going to be teaching a Kindergarten-1st grade split classroom. It will be different from the past 5 years of 1st-2nd split, but I am so happy to be back in the classroom after being out and working with teachers. WOW! I am so lucky to be a teacher! Can you say that about your profession?

Here is the new pond, partially filled.
This will probably be where the gate to the habitat goes.
Robert adds some rain water we saved.
I am trying to weight it down so we can backfill around it.
The "pond" is taking shape.
Here are the bricks. We try to imagine why there might be a complete layer of bricks under our yard...maybe an old brick patio? maybe an old sidewalk in Archie from 100 years ago....who knows?
Robert is beginning the base of the pond for me. It is full of bricks?? and tree roots. In the far left corner if you look, you will see Stub. She was abused by Drake as well. She really looks beaten up!
This is Sassy. She has been abused by Drake. I tried to wash off her muddiness, and she is spreading her tail feathers and trying to dry out behind the chicken house.
They are really busy with that dirt.
Goldie and Dove help clear out the bugs and worms that were under the stones.
I have staked out the area. I have also decided where the "pond" will go. The stump area was our old crab apple tree that fell a few years ago.
This is the place and part of the supplies.
