Kevin's Story
Kevin Brooks is best known for the versatility of his many works - portraits, murals, and exhibition
pieces to magazine illustration, book jackets, CD designs, and children's book illustrations. Mr.
Brooksʼ realist & impressionistic style with bold palette evoke the sensuousness of nature and the
liberation of the human spirit.
Kevin Brooks became a professional singer/guitarist at the age of seventeen while doing a weekly
TV series with CBS. The show, called âTell It Like It Was,â first of its kind in the nation, aired in
Philadelphia, Pa. 1967-69 and featured African American historical lore as exemplified in story,
song, and art. As co-host, Kevin performed as singer/guitarist and artist who drew and painted the
featured stories narrated by singer and host Dallie Muhammed, while also attending the
Philadelphia College of Art. He studied painting with Will Barnet and later, Kevin received
mentoring from his friend, the late Don Miller.
After being an adjunct art instructor in the Integrative Studies Program at Pratt University, Kevin
developed a teaching method in his Art Discovery Program called BCSI while teaching art for 7
years at the Newark Boys Chorus School in Newark, NJ. Through specific techniques the BCSI
method of learning: Belief, Courage Strength, Intuition is based on changing a doubtful, negative
mindset into a completely esteemed and positive one. As designer and resident artist for 18 years
with Project Impact, an Arts in Education resource organization, Kevin has produced several mural
and workshop residencies throughout a variety of schools in Union City, NJ. and NY. The visual
art redesign of school lobbies with an infusion of murals has become a requested campaign
experience. For students, teachers, staff, and parents... participation in this type of program has
produced amazing and lasting results in the discovery of what skills can be learned.
Mr. Brooksʼ notable published portraits include Muhammed Ali, the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan
and Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago, also two oil portraits of Cissy Houston, commissioned by
Whitney Houston, which generously led to several portraits for Tony Anderson of Sony Records.
His painting âStridesâ, depic...Expand for more
ting South African Olympic hopefuls training in secrecy, was featured
at the African American Arts and Heritage Festival at the Wachovia Arts Center. âStridesâ was
exhibited along with three other works at Johnson & Johnson Corporate Headquarters in New
Jersey. Mr. Brooks has also exhibited work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia
University of The Arts, Kean College, Ryder College, and in Moscow as part of a cultural
exchange through the Trenton Artists Workshop Association.
A major highlight of Mr. Brooksʼ career was painting The Colin Powell Timeline Mural to honor the
retired Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This mural graces the lobby along with 3 other
murals in the Colin Powell Elementary School, Union City, NJ. Meeting Colin Powell and his wife
Alma Powell was an extraordinary honor. After being introduced as I said those words he
responded, âNo, the honor is all mine.â I remain in awe of his humble presence. Presenting him
with my framed reproduction of the timeline mural after the students sang, produced an
unforgettable occasion for all.
Mr.Brooksʼ first published painting, a portrait of Carlo Gambino, appeared in the Today Magazine
of the Philadelphia Inquirer in 1972. It was followed by illustrations in Philadelphia Magazine,
Sports Illustrated, Intellectual Digest, RF Illustrated, and many others. He has designed a
presentation press kit for friend Joe Clark of the movie âLean On Meâ. Working on Mac, Kevin has
designed CDʼs for several recording artists such as Muddy Waters, Oliver Lake, Dan Crisci, Ginny
Johnston, Charles Ives, and his own CD. Book illustrations include Agatha Christie, Pocketbooks,
Harper Collins, Dial, Manor Books, and Random House. In addition, his art appears in the
childrenʼs books Louie Armstrong, Window Wishing, and A Boy and A Boa.
Kevinʼs largest mural is the 2007 mural for The Newark Boys Chorus School on Broad Street in Newark, NJ.
This 80 ft. x 18 ft. mural depicts several scenes which characterize school life and historical achievement.
Mr.Brooksʼ stunning fusion of realism and impressionistic color is demonstrated throughout his
work. He is a master at capturing the character and spirit of his subjects.
