Kevin's Story
Life
Kevin Christophersen, M.A., is a full time tenure track faculty at Columbia College Chicago. He began his career in advertising when he landed a part-time job as a receptionist at Leo Burnett as a means to pay for college.
He spent his lunch hours networking, working on various projects, and learning as much as he could about the advertising world. After graduating from Columbia with a BA in Marketing Communication, he was promoted to Media Traffic Coordinator at Burnett where he worked on Ameritech, All State, Dairy, Keebler, Kellogg, McDonald's, Oldsmobile, Philip Morris, Procter and Gamble, and other national consumer and business-to-business clients/brands.
Later, he obtained positions in client service at various other agencies and supervised/
facilitated all aspects of strategic communication for the following clients: Abbott Labs, Boise Cascade, Liberty Federal Bank, Pet Ag, Bobs Candy, F&F Foods, Sorbee, Scala Beef, and Zenith among others.
He was successful in the advertising industry but felt he wanted more. He wanted to give back and provide students with the knowledge he had obtained to help them succee...Expand for more
d. He started teaching a class as an adjunct in the fall of 1999, became Artist in Residence in 2000, and the following year joined the full-time faculty at Columbia College Chicago.
He says, "Working my way through college made me realize the importance of internships and networking. Therefore, I believe it is imperative to bring advertising industry contacts into the classroom in order to illustrate the wide variety of communication careers and help students establish ongoing relationships."
Outside the classroom, he serves as the Co-Chair of the Marketing Task Force for the Columbia College Student Center Steering Committee, and he is the Marketing Communication Department Articulation Coordinator. Further, in response to his tenure committee's recommendations, he earned his M.A. in the Department of Arts, Entertainment and Media Management at Columbia.
In addition to his career in academia, he's the Marketing Manager of the Hearts Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises money for HIV/AIDS service organizations; a member of the CAF, the Chicago Advertising Federation, and a freelance marketing consultant.
