Kevin's Story
High School pretty much sucked for me. I was unhappy, lost, never really knew what was going on. It wasn't till much later that I seemed to 'catch up' and started to make my way.
After a very long and tumultuous start, I went back to school and first got a business admin degree. Went into business in the 80's with one of the first intranet (not quite internet yet) consulting firms in the SF Bay area in California. After a few years of doing that, I became aware of the homeless population and soon sold my end of the biz and went into volunteering fulltime for a few years. Then I went back to school and completed my first masters in Social Work, followed by a masters in Behavioral Science a few years later.
In 1997, I was fortunate enough to start up a program of shelter and special services for the chronically homeless in NY called Safe Haven Project. Today, there are more than 60 Safe Havens serving various special-needs populations across the country. I 'retired' from that in 2002 partly to spend more time wit...Expand for more
h my son, Jacob, who I adopted several years earlier. He is now 25. Man, how time flies!
Anyhoo, I spent a year sailing after that, then back to NY for a couple years. After that, I lived in New Mexico. I had heart failure 5 years ago (a result of the common flu). I wasn't supposed to live through that one, but I did and now I'm actually healthier than ever. I guess the high altitude and new attitude helped.
I'm currently living in Southern California where I am writing a book about the past couple of years I've spent with Leonard Knight, American Folk Artist who built Salvation Mountain (look it up).
I had my first heart attack last year so, this will probably be my last year of actually working. After this, I am beginning to plan another homeless shelter. Haven't decided where just yet. With our economy what it is and the damage done to our country primarily by the republican horde, we'll need all the shelters we can get pretty soon :)
That's about it.
