Kevin's Story

Life I was born in May 1959 in Albuquerque, NM, the fifth of six children in my family. In Albuquerque, I attended McCollum ES from 1965 to 1971, Kennedy JHS from 1971 to 1972, the Special Education Center from 1972 to 1973, Grant JHS from 1973 to 1974, and Manzano HS from 1974 through graduation in 1977. I went to Brigham Young University from 1977 to 1978, then worked a while in Albuquerque before leaving on a church mission in early January 1979 that took me to Santiago, Chile from March 1979 to December 1980. Upon my return to the U.S., I went back to BYU and was a student there through April 1982. I attended the University of New Mexico during the 1982-83 school year, finishing up the course work for my Spanish major and English minor. I then transferred those credits to BYU and graduated from BYU in August 1983. I started law school at UNM in the fall of 1983, and later I was admitted to the MBA program at UNM as well. I married Dorine Finnemore (nee Wilson, a 1976 graduate of Eldorado HS in Albuquerque) in December 1984, and I adopted Dorine's daughters Kristy and Heidi in December 1985. We also later had three children together--Devery (1986), Darren (1988), and Kiley (1992). I finally graduated from UNM with my JD and MBA in May 1988. After passing the bar, I first worked temporarily for one law firm before finding a permanent position with the law firm of Threet & King, where I worked until the summer of 1992. At that time, I left the legal profession and went to work for Sandia National Laboratories, a DOE M&O weapons lab in Albuquerque, where I'm currently working as a financial analyst. Dorine and I have now been married twenty-three years and are watching our kids grow up scarily fast. Most of our children have also attended Manzano, with Heidi graduating in 2000, Devery in 2004, and Darren in 2006. (By the time Kiley graduates in 2010, we will have had at least one child attending Manzano for fourteen consecutive school years.) School I attended McCollum Elementary School in Grades 1-6, starting i...Expand for more
n the fall of 1965 and finishing up in June of 1971. I got off on the wrong foot in first grade, and it took years for me to start enjoying school, but fifth and sixth grades were great. Then I attended seventh grade at Kennedy Junior High, hating practically every minute of it. In eighth grade, after bailing out on Kennedy, I attended a private SpEd school in downtown Albuquerque, which was an enjoyable respite from the public-school junior high jungle. In ninth grade, I attended Grant Junior High, first starting out in the SpEd program there and eventually migrating into regular classes. Grant was a far cry from Kennedy--hoodlums fell fairly low on the social spectrum at Grant--and I had a relatively enjoyable year there. Finally, I attended high school at Manzano High for three years, again having a rocky first year but eventually learning to enjoy much of what the school had to offer. College I attended Brigham Young University in 1977-1978, and then again in 1981-1982 after serving a church mission in Chile. I ended up doing much of the course work in my Spanish major and English minor at the University of New Mexico in the 1982-1983 school year, transferring the credits to BYU and receiving my B.A. from BYU, magna cum laude, in August 1983. I started law school at UNM in the fall of 1983, and then I started the MBA program at UNM's Anderson School of Management in the fall of 1984. I received both my Juris Doctor and MBA degrees in May 1988. Workplace After graduating from law school and business school in 1988, I first worked temporarily for one law firm, and then obtained a permanent position with the law firm of Threet & King in Albuquerque, where I worked from 1989 to 1992. However, having neither the ego nor the temperament to make lawyering my life's pursuit--after all, I grew up as a fairly typical self-loathing, insecure Mormon kid--I left the practice of law in the summer of 1992 and went to work at Sandia National Laboratories, where I'm now working as a financial analyst for one of the tech orgs.
