The following story by me was published in the May, 2009 issue of Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, as the winner of the Mysterious Photograph Contest.
READY TO ANSWER THE BELL
Exhausted after a long night, the members of Delta Omega Alpha admired their prize, now resting in the fraternity house’s backyard. “This is our best prank ever”, exclaimed Larry Dodge, mastermind of the theft. “Even if State beats us this afternoon, they can’t ring that stupid bell like they always do.” State’s football team had won the last ten editions of the big game, and the b...Expand for more
ell ringing grated on their cross-town rivals.
A pledge recruited for the theft asked, “Larry, what’ll we do with the bell now?”
“Don’t worry, kid”, a nonchalant Larry said, opening a beer. “After the game, we’ll drive it back to State. Painted in our school colors, of course.”
As the laughter died down, four uniformed officers and an older man in plain clothes walked into the yard. “Forget about the paint job, boys,” the plainclothesman said, “you’re going downtown”.
“How did you know it was us?” asked Larry Dodge. “We just got back, and I’m sure nobody saw us.”
“I thought something might happen to the bell this year,” the detective said, “so I put a GPS tracker in it. You might as well have rung the bell all the way here.”
As the frat members were led into police cruisers, the detective turned to one of the officers, saying, “Let’s hurry up this booking. I want to be with my old teammates from State when they call us out to the field to mark the 25th anniversary of our winning the big game.”".
