Kevin's Story

Life I kind of doubt that many have fond memories of me from Wakefield Memorial HS. That's OK. I was a self-centered nerd, worrying too much about whether others liked me - with the predictable poor results. I then developed interests that steered me toward being more likable to myself. I guess more people like me now but, while being liked is nice, I don't worry about it. You just have to be who you are. I'm pretty much OK with who I've become, though some improvements are still needed. My wife and dog like me, and that's what is most important (Though I still feel I owe some apologies for who I used to be). After an ill-conceived start at Northeastern University (I had no business continuing school right out of HS), I got my draft notice. I since overcame some of my objections to the military, and agreed to disagree on the rest. Now I'm an Army (soldier) retiree after 21 years, and an Army (civilian) retiree - with a total of 37 years government service (Glutton for punishment, and obviously not that bright for retiring in the middle of a recession). I also have worked as an historian/author, hike leader, animal behaviorist (providing rehab for rescued dogs with behavioral issues from prior abuse), blacksmith, genealogical consultant, and lecturer. After finally completing my BA and MS studies, I worked as an Adjunct in Criminal Justice, Political Science and Public Administration at F...Expand for more
airleigh Dickinson University. I like to work more with animals - I understand them better than I understand people, and I certainly understand them better than I understood most of my students. Now I guess I'm fully retired, but I still try to keep busy. I research and maintain about 20 family trees. We bought a second home in Key Largo, and maintaining two homes is a little time-consuming, but we welcome visitors when we're down there. With my wife retired she has more time to find things for me to do. With no nearby dog rehab opportunities, I began volunteering at a wild bird sanctuary, where I worked for 4 years as staff docent, explaining the birds to visitors from around the world. There's a community college nearby, but I think the thrill of teaching has worn a little thin. If all else fails, some people are of the opinion that, in Key Largo you have three choices - Own a boat, fish, or drink. It's my wife's boat, I don't fish much, but I do like beer! So far, my best travels have been to French Polynesia, 75% of the Caribbean islands and Honduras, Barrow and Denali in Alaska, Norway, Sweden, and hiking/rafting into/across the Grand Canyon five times. Most recent was Ireland So much more to see! and Iceland and is next!! My wife, Lynn, and I decided not to have kids, and instead have had a series of four-legged children. We currently have one dog, a rescued multi-breed named Arlo.
