Kevin's Story
Life
Hmmm... a bio.
I was born in St. Boniface hospital and grew up in Winnipeg with my older sister and both parents. We lived on Martin Ave. just off Henderson. We lived there and I went to Lord Selkirk school until the end of grade 4.
We then moved close to Bird's Hill and I was forced into old Bird's Hill school (where the Sobey's is now). It was a s**t hole. I spent a year in the new Bird's Hill School the next year and then three years in Robert Andrews Jr. High.
Good times.
Anyways, then I was heavily into my banger phase where I shunned the haircuts, bought up all the Metallica albums I could and started going to Kildonan East Collegiate where I took power mechanics as a vocation. (I also won the power mech award at grad. $500 worth of tools as a prize! Pretty pimpin')
Met a lot of cool people at K.E.
Right after High School I moved into an apartment with my then girlfriend Joanne.
Lived in E.K. for awhile and started Land Surveying by chance at a private surveying firm.
I thought surveying was allright so I decided in 2000 to go to College and take Geomatics Technology. (That's fancy talk for Surveying) received my diploma in 2003 and for some reason I decided to move in on a job offered through the college for a huge surveying company in High Level, Alberta.
High Level is a fairly small town about an hour away from the NorthWest Territories. I moved there by myself and rented an apartment and worked more hours than anybody I know. We worked out in the bush surveying oil and gas leases and worked 7 days a week for about 25-35 days stra...Expand for more
ight and then got about 3-5 days off. Great experience but the wage wasn't worth the "being stuck in High Level" experience.
I stayed in High Level for 3 days over a year. I came to Winnipeg two times in the duration. The first time I flew in for Christmas ($2,000 for round trip tix. Wasn't too pleased.)
and the second trip was, unfortunately, for Lori Clarke's funeral. I drove in for that one and took a week off work. 4 days were for the drive and three days in Winnipeg.
Had a blind date up in High Level too.... but I don't want to talk about it.
After the year was up I gave my damned head a shake and said: "Self, you have to get out of this s**t-hole." and I threw in my 2 weeks notice and emailed a bunch of resumes to Manitoba.
I didn't get any call backs from Winnipeg companies but I got offers from Brandon and Dauphin. The company in Brandon offered a good deal and it was a 2 hour drive from Winnipeg so so got a friend to drive to High Level and we rented a Uhaul and got me the hell out.
I found a wicked apartment in Brandon and worked there for the past year doing survey work in Manitoba's oil & gas sector but then they did a few things that weren't very cool and I finally had enough and gave my 2 weeks notice there too.
That was about a month ago. I now have a job at Bituminex surveying for construction projects and am back to living in the Peg! Decent apartment, decent job and a shwack of friends back!
Welp.... that's my story.
If your reading this and recognize my name then throw an email at me and I'll buy you a beer. That's how it works.
