Kim's Story

Life My cat and I live in Glens Falls, NY near Lake George and Saratoga. I spend most of my days writing and doing art work with local groups, especially now that the garden has been put to bed. I volunteer with the Red Cross and with the City's Recreation Council. I continued to teach sailing until just a few years ago, some of the last were with the YMCA Women's Weekend on Lake George, some of the best was in Sail Caribbean. Near Bliss. Women friends come together for monthly potlucks, for skiing, camping and hiking during the season. Friday nights is the Progressive Film Series. There is a regular contradance in town and a couple Open Mics I've sung and read poetry at. I am happier now more than ever, since I retired and am attending to my health. High School The scariest part of school was at Oldfields when I got lost downstairs and couldn't find my way back. Oh, as a flower child, I had been to the Superintendents Office for Sit-ins for Peace and Non Violence and singing songs of solidarity, but still I didn't know my way back upstairs. The other scarey thing was fights in the locker room at field hockey away games, or on the bus. The best thing about school was the Library, it was where all my friends hung out, especially at the one table in the front by the window. James B, Bob C, John W, John W, Liz B, Susan H, and a couple other people. It was where I landed and sharpened my debate skills. The other best place was Melin's drop-in center, complete with bean bags. It was the place where I could let go and settle down. Then there was going to Myrtle Beach with the Melins, Bob, James, and Susan and I. And the Millers? I remember taking the train back - with a cra...Expand for more
zy sunburn, but nothing like Susan's. MYF Retreats and walks on the beach. Nothing like it. College The scariest thing about college was failing papers, when I didn't even know I was lost. The best thing about college was the relaxed time we had to develop social relationships with students and teachers, it helped me alot to know people better, a sense of community. I was a professional student for a while:: Keuka BS Education Political Science and Philosophy '79 FMCC Information and Technology, Research Skills '80 Smith College Teacher Certification/ Administration '80 SCCC American Government and Intro to Law '81 Adelphi Para Legal Research Certificate Program '82-83 I finally completed a masters program SUNYA Rockefeller Institute MLS Library Science '91-'92 I had pretty good skills, but wasn't well grounded academically coming out of HF. Now I think that's from ADD and bipolar we've just discovered. Learning and work was difficult for me, I could do the job, but the other stuff - but the office politics, I never figured out how to play the game. Workplace I Spent a dozen or so years teaching, and then an equal number of years as a librarian. Working under the glass ceiling in a pink collar world I often worked two jobs and kept up summer jobs. I delighted in all sorts of work on the side; electrical contracting, aging/ hospice, prison, genealogy and local history research, insurance, printing, big brothers/ sisters program development, hotel lifeguard, hospital housekeeping, League of Women Voters, YMCA, yeshiva, case management, disabilities advocate, lawyer's office paralegal, doctor's office, lumber company, public libraries and in schools.
