Kim Beasley:  

Kim Allen Beasley, AIA Beasley Architectural Group, LLC Kim Allen Beasley is Principal of Beasley Architectural Group, LLC, specializing in accessible architecture. From 1986 to 2000, Mr. Beasley served as National Architecture Director for the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) in Washington, DC. In this capacity, Mr. Beasley directed PVA’s national program to promote design for persons with disabilities. His architectural practice spans over 35 years, including twelve years of medical facility planning, design, and construction experience, and eighteen years focused on design for persons with disabilities. In 1984, Mr. Beasley was given PVA’s Meritorious Achievement Award for his design of numerous spinal cord injury facilities throughout the United States and credited for the original development of the VA Spinal Cord Injury Center Design Guide. In 1988, he co-authored Design for Hospitality, a comprehensive textbook on accessible ho-tel/motel design. In 1994, he co-authored the Second Edition of Accessible Design for Hospitali-ty, ADA Guidelines for Planning Accessible Hotels, Motels, and Other Recreational Facilities, pub-lished by McGraw-Hill. He also co-authored the Fair Housing Design Guide, published in 1992. Mr. Beasley, along with Mr. Thomas D. Davies, co-authored Accessible Home Design: Architec-tural Solutions for the Wheelchair User, published in 1999. Mr. Beasley is a contributing author to the Universal Design Handbook, showcased at the 2001 AIA National Convention. His chapter is entitled Access to Sports and Entertainment, and covers stadium-style movie theaters, stadiums, arenas, and other related facilities. In 1989, Mr. Beasley invented an adaptable stadium seat for persons with disabilities, to be used in stadiums, arenas, and other places of assembly. Patents were issued in 1991 and assigned to the Paralyzed Veterans of America. In 1993, Mr. Beasley was awarded the Medal of Excellence by Engineering News Record for his work on behalf of persons with disabilities nationwide. Mr. Beasley has served on behalf of the U.S. Access Board on Federal Advisory Committees and Regulatory Negotiations Committees on numerous areas of accessibility for specialized facilities. Mr. Beasley chaired the Federal Advisory sub-committee on areas of assembly, and also served on the Regulatory Negotiations Committee for Outdoor Recreation Facilities, whose work was com-pleted in 1998. In 1996, on behalf of PVA and its consulting subsidiary, Paradigm Design Group, Mr. Beasley accepted the Potomac Award, the highest honor given by the American Society of Interior Designers in Washington, DC. Mr. Beasley, serving as Managing Principal of Paradigm Design Group, led ADA consulting efforts in Atlanta, Georgia, to make the 1996 Olympic Games the most accessible in Olympic History. In 1998, Mr. Beasley appeared with Bob Vila on the nationally syndicated television program “Home Again” to tour a home in which he provided design assistance, and to discuss accessible home design. Mr. Beasley has lectured internationally to audiences in Canada, Europe, Australia, and the Far East. He is considered one of the foremost experts in the field of accessible design. Mr. Beasley has served as an expert in ADA litigation for several confidential clients. Mr. Beasley holds Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VA Tech). He is licensed in Virginia and Maryland and holds an NCARB Certificate.
