Kim's Story
I was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, where my father was on temporary duty with Strategic Air Command. I attended Eastridge Elementary until 5th grade when my family moved to Northern Virginia. I finished grade school at Oakton Elementary, went on to Lanier Middle School, and graduated from Fairfax Hight School. After two years at George Mason University and two semesters studying photography at Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, I married an Air Force medic and transferred to Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA.
I started my journalism career at a small weekly newspaper in Gloucester, VA. In 1980, my husband Charlie and I moved to Chicago, where I worked as an editor on two scientific journals and a new photography magazine called Darkroom Techniques & Creative Camera. During our first 10 years in Chicago (living in the Wrigleyville community), Charlie and I became involved in local politics â getting a fascinating insiders' view of the Chicago "machine" at work. Charlie went from community theater and set building to a career in motion pictures. After our son Jonathan was born in 1986, Charlie worked on major productions in ...Expand for more
the Chicagoland area, including The Untouchables, Field of Dreams, Backdraft and several John Hughes films.
I freelanced as a writer and graphic artist until Jonathan was old enough for preschool. In 1990, I went to work for Professional Photographers of America as an editor of the association's professional magazine. A year later, I was promoted to Editor-in-Chief of PPA's industrial photography publication, newly revamped to be the first digital photo magazine, Photo-Electronic Imaging (PEI). Two years later, PPA moved its headquarters to Atlanta, GA, where I became responsible for both monthly publications. I left the company in 2000 and started writing for other photo publications, including International magazines published in Germany, India and Japan. Although I don't travel as frequently as I used to, I'm still working as a freelance writer and photographer.
Charlie has since retired in the Los Angeles area and Jonathan earned his degree in Cinematography from Georgia State University. Jon's recently been accepted into the International Cinematographers Guild and works on movies, commercials and documentaries in the mid-Atlantic region.
