Say hi to the Bald Eagle
Our ship -- Veendam --- in Haines Alaska -- a small town down the channel from Skagway - old Alaska -- few tourists.
Juneau -- Serenade of The Seas Arriving. We were first in. Cleared up about an hour or so after arriving.
Lake Aleknagik -- the white you see about 1/4 mile away is ice. Lake freezes over in winter and you cross on snowmobiles and hope the ice is not too thin. And yes there are bears and moose in the area plus 5 runs of Salmon
On cruise in College Fjord
Looking back at College Fjord
Glacier Bay - approaching Margerie Glacier Yes it is raining --- lightly
Some of the homes in Aleknagik from the pier
Oh yes lake still mostly frozen, chunks breaking off and drifting to the pier and the river to Bristol Bay
Aleknagik School where Summer teaches
Aleknagik pier looking northwest across lake 22 mile long and 2 miles wide
Transportation in Aleknagik --- quads and boats - very few autos - gravel roads
You are looking at a Bald Eagle's nest. The eagles mate for life, nest in the same place each year and add to the nest until it becomes too heavy and the tree breaks and it all falls to the ground. Some nests have weighed
One of the many waterfalls that are in the area. Lush vegetation too. Water very cold!
Alaska Ferry --- most of the travel by locals is done on the ferry system. Some folk even camp out on deck. Very common sight in these waters.
Seven Seas Mariner --- verrrry upscale and expensive --- carries about 700 guests. Norwegian Pearl is a bit like the Carnival ship that follows but a bit more classy and subdued. Pearl even has a bowling alley on board. It
Carnival Splendor --- a fun ship --- about 2400 guests -- very modern and Vegas like. With all these ships in port can someone say "ChaChing"?
Entrance to Saxman village where all the totem poles are located --- brought in from all about for restoration and preservation.
