Kimberly's Story
Life
Latest news!! I got engaged to a wonderful Cornhusker graduate over Thanksgiving. Planning a wedding likely in the spring here in Santa Fe, then will move to the farm in Nebraska. Will probably continue to do GIS contracting as Gerald has a PC repair and website business which I will be involved in as well.
Workplace
After getting my Forestry degree from NAU, I spent 5 years in northern Virginia (way too many people in too small of area), then a summer on the Tonto NF in Payson, then would you believe JV Softball coach at Buena! It was an interesting interlude between forestry jobs, Larry L'Heureux was the JV Baseball coach and that made the trip for away games much more fun.
Then I started my career with New Mexico State Forestry. For seven years on the Chama District I got paid to walk around in the woods and watch wildlife, keeping loggers in line with our regulations, and fighting fire (what...Expand for more
a rush). Then in the state office running the technology program for the division, doing everything from pc purchasing and troubleshooting problems to the website, GIS, and database management, stretching into programming in Visual Basic and ColdFusion. Who'd have thought COBOL would lead to this? Finished a masters in engineering in GIS spring of 2005 from University of Colorado - Denver.
Now I'm the top forester for the division, state forester and deputy are two range guys and the bureau chief I'm supervised by has a degree in soils, even the fire guy is wildlife. I manage the commercial timber harvest program, all landowner assistance programs, and supervise the seedling program manager, the urban forester, the forest entomologist, and still do GIS. Never a dull moment. Often wish for the simple days of walking in the woods instead of managing paper and budgets from a windowless office in the capitol.
